Well known bass player <strong>Lars Lehmann<\/strong> show us which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/guitar_and_bass_effects.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>effect pedal<\/strong><\/a> creates which sound, in our multi-part series &#8220;<strong>Bass Sounds We Love<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>There\u2019s more to authentically conveying a <strong>musical style<\/strong>, than merely playing the right notes. As a bassist, the first thing audiences, studios, or band mates notice is your sound! If something\u2019s wrong here or doesn\u2019t quite fit the bill, you\u2019re off to a bad start.<\/p>\n<p>As they say, &#8220;You never get a second chance at a first impression!&#8221; In other words, the fully booked live- or studio freelancer is often characterized by having the right sound in the bag, for every situation!<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-33319\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-85x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fender Jazz Bass\" width=\"36\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-85x300.jpg 85w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 36px) 100vw, 36px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Your choice of <strong>instrument<\/strong> and your <strong>style of playing<\/strong> (finger, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/picks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>plectrum<\/strong><\/a>, slapping &#8230;) are, of course, enormously important, as well as your attitude. Metal is of course not played in the same attitude as pop or nursery rhymes! However, not all bassists are fortunate enough to own every imaginable <strong>instrument<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/bass_amplifiers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>amp<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/8x10_bass_cabinets.html?viewMode=block\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cabinet<\/a><\/strong>, in order to be able to optimally play every genre possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33324 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-5-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"Electro Harmonix Bass Big Muff Distortion Fuzz Bodeneffektger\u00e4t\" width=\"102\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-5-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-5.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 102px) 100vw, 102px\" \/><\/a>So, what can we do? Don\u2019t worry, there is a <strong>solution<\/strong>, and it comes with a long list of electronic devices. Various\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/guitar_and_bass_effects.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">effects<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>are especially useful in guiding your own bass sound in multiple ways. In this article, we present various bass sounds using <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/guitar_and_bass_effects.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">effects<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>that we sorted according to<strong> various styles<\/strong>. In order to reproduce the sounds at home, we will also reveal the settings used in the examples.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-33325\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-6-291x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fender Rumble 40\" width=\"126\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-6-291x300.jpg 291w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-6.jpg 581w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 126px) 100vw, 126px\" \/><\/a>Another\u00a0thing we should\u00a0mention: there are so many styles and trends within a genre, so of course we aren\u2019t claiming our examples as the be-all end-all. \u00a0As always, there are several perspectives and approaches to this. A rock sound for example can be both distorted and aggressive (such as with Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers) or clean and tidy like Dave Ellefson from Megadeth<em>.<\/em> Therefore our <strong>sound files<\/strong>\u00a0only offers a few and there are certainly loads more!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Part 1: Pop<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Pop-Allround sound<\/strong><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-33368-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/wav\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1.wav?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1.wav\">https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1.wav<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>In pop, an &#8220;allround sound&#8221; from the bass is often required. This should be <strong>balanced<\/strong>, <strong>warm<\/strong> and <strong>powerful<\/strong>, to ensure a healthy foundation in the songs. Usually, the sound of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/electric_basses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>electric bass<\/strong><\/a> is not overly distorted or aggressive in this style, but there are of course exceptions to the rule.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33320 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-1-259x300.jpg\" alt=\"Xotic RC Booster\" width=\"114\" height=\"122\" \/><\/a>In our sound sample, which could be an intro or outro to a pop song, you can hear a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search.html?sw=Fender%20Jazz%20Bass&amp;filter=true&amp;manufacturer[0]=Fender&amp;viewMode=block\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Fender Jazz Bass<\/strong><\/a>, whose signal was chased by a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/xotic_rc_booster.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xotic RC booster<\/a><\/strong>. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/bass_preamps.html?viewMode=block\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>preamp<\/strong> <\/a>from the USA sounds wonderfully clear and clean as long as the gain control isn\u2019t set too high.<\/p>\n<p>The settings are as follows: Gain: 12h, Treble: 2h, Bass: 2h<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pop ballade (fretless)<\/strong><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-33368-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/wav\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-1.wav?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-1.wav\">https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-1.wav<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/fretless_basses.html?viewMode=block\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fretless bass guitars<\/a><\/strong> were very popular in the 80\u2019s. Bassists such as Pino Palladino (who played with Paul Young) worked on\u00a0countless titles with their Fretless tone<em>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-33321\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-2-270x300.jpg\" alt=\"MXR M 83 Bass Chorus Deluxe\" width=\"91\" height=\"101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-2-270x300.jpg 270w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/bass-sounds-we-love-part-1-2.jpg 539w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 91px) 100vw, 91px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even though it\u2019s less common these days, a well-played <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/fretless_basses.html?viewMode=block\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fretless bass<\/a><\/strong> still hasn\u2019t lost its charm. You can broaden the sound with a little <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/chorus_flanger_phaser.html?viewMode=block\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chorus <\/a><\/strong>effect, adding character and depth. Incidentally, the great <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/electric_basses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">electric bass<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>innovator Jaco Pastoriu, used to enrich the sound of his fretless bass with a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/chorus_flanger_phaser.html?viewMode=block\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chorus<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>pedal.<\/p>\n<p>In our example, you will hear the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/mxr_m_83_bass_chorus_deluxe.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe<\/a><\/strong>. The settings of the pedal are as follows: Bass: 1h, Treble: 2h, Intensity: 2h, Rate: 11h, Width: 2h.
