Sure, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/strings.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>strings<\/strong><\/a> were kept in place,\u00a0but it wasn&#8217;t enough: the guitars weren&#8217;t fully and precisely intonated. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-32037\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-6-122x300.jpg\" width=\"93\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-6-122x300.jpg 122w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-6.jpg 162w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 93px) 100vw, 93px\" \/>With the TOM bridge, guitarists are\u00a0allowed to choose the perfect distance from the saddle to the nut for <strong>every single string<\/strong>, obtaining a 100% perfect intonation.<br \/>\nThe bridge was developed and invented by <strong>Gibson&#8217;s<\/strong> president <strong>Ted McCarty<\/strong> in 1953 for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/gibson_super_400_ces_na.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Gibson Super 400<\/strong><\/a> and later,\u00a0in 1954, for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/gibson_lpcstbk.htm?ref=search_rslt_gibson+les+paul+custom_147148_2\" target=\"_blank\">Les Paul Custom<\/a><\/strong>. It was quickly made clear that this piece of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/spareparts_for_instruments.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>hardware<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0did not represent just a &#8220;custom&#8221; upgrade, but a standard feature that every guitar deserved. Fast forward to this day, a high percentage of fixed bridge electric guitars have a Tune-O-Matic style bridge, often partnered with a separate stopbar\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/tailpieces_for_guitars.html\" target=\"_blank\">tailpiece<\/a>.\u00a0(designed starting from the original wraparound design).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Construction<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-32033\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-4-300x225.jpg\" width=\"230\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-4-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-4-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-4.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/>The Tune-O-Matic bridge design is quite simple to understand.\u00a0The main part sits on two <strong>adjustable posts<\/strong>, screwed down into the guitar body. The bar part consists of <strong>six individually adjustable saddles,<\/strong> with small grooves notched that should match the <strong>string<\/strong> gauge and shape. Historically, the &#8220;Vintage&#8221; (ABR-1) had the screws facing the <strong>neck<\/strong>, while the &#8220;Modern&#8221; (Nashville) screws are facing the <strong>stopbar<\/strong>. There&#8217;s no exact rule, as people may prefer to have the screws on the Nashville side and be able to adjust the saddles position more <strong>easily<\/strong> with the screwdriver.<\/p>\n<p>Being the bridge built with metal parts, there&#8217;s a side effect that <strong>surprised<\/strong> Ted himself: a change in <strong>tone<\/strong> and <strong>sustain<\/strong>, due to the coupling between strings and body. Players today are constantly looking for <strong>different<\/strong> materials (especially for the stopbar, but also) in order to achieve\u00a0<strong>tonal<\/strong> <strong>varieties<\/strong>, such as brass, nickel and aluminium.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the Tune-O-Matic bridge should be arched to match the <strong>radius<\/strong> of the fretboard. On Gibson style guitar, the TOM has a 12&#8243; radius.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Models &amp; Varieties<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Throughout the years, <strong>Gibson<\/strong> made some variations on\u00a0their bridges. Thanks to his thumbwheel system, the height on both sides can be adjusted within minutes. The &#8220;True Historic&#8221; version, that matches the bridges built between 1954 and 1962, doesn&#8217;t have a retainer wire, so be careful when re-stringing your guitar as the saddles may fall off! You can buy ABR-1 style bridge from manufacturer such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/gibson_bridgesteg_abr1_chrom.htm?ref=search_rslt_abr-1_182016_0\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Gibson<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/abm_2500nre_bridge.htm?ref=search_rslt_abr-1_270552_1\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ABM<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/tonepros_avr2_2n.htm?ref=search_rslt_abr-1_225014_10\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>TonePros<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/montreux_232_abr_1_relic_set.htm?ref=search_rslt_abr-1_323614_7\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Montreux<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Schaller Wide travel <\/strong>aka<strong> &#8220;Harmonica Bridge&#8221;<\/strong> (1970-1980)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-32029\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-1-300x214.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-1-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-1.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>This bridge was built by Schaller under Gibson request in order to accomodate lighter strings, as they started to become popular in the 70s. Lighter strings couldn&#8217;t intonate properly on the ABR-1 due to the travel of the saddle that wasn&#8217;t long enough.\u00a0Gibson responded back with this bridge, which is not as popular as the Nashville, and can be found on some vintage SG&#8217;s. Unfortunately, it&#8217;s hard to buy the Harmonica Bridge today, but Schaller offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/schaller_stmc_steg.htm?ref=search_rslt_schaller+wide+travel_121998_17\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>modern version<\/strong><\/a>, with adjustable string spacing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/guitar_bridges.html?sw=tune%20o%20matic\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-32038\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-7-300x174.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-7-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/09\/tune-o-matic-the-lord-of-guitar-bridges-7.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Nashville<\/strong> (&#8220;<strong>Modern<\/strong>&#8220;)<strong> bridge<\/strong><\/a> (1975-)<br \/>\nWhen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/gibson_pbbr045_nashville_bridge.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Gibson<\/strong><\/a> moved their Les Paul production to Nashville, a new bridge was required. Gibson took the ABR-1 design and developed into a bigger and sturdier bridge. Main differences are the extended saddles travel, bigger posts and saddles screws orientation. As today, one of the most popular guitar bridges on the market, is found on virtually every Gibson you may buy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/gretsch.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Gretsch<\/strong><\/a> issued his own version, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/gretsch_adjusto_matic_bridge_ch.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Adjust-O-Matic<\/strong><\/a>, virtually identical to the Nashville design. The concept behind is simple: if the string is able to roll on a moving wheel, there&#8217;s virtually no chance that it will snap, as there is zero friction. The saddles rolling parts are manufactured from solid milled bell brass. The bridge features a renewed saddle design, called &#8220;eCAM&#8221;, that provides direct contact between the string and body of the guitar. Vintage or modern posts?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One of the main questions we get\u00a0asked when a customer is looking for a brand new tune-o-matic bridge is the following: &#8220;<strong>Do I need Nashville or ABR type of posts? Vintage or modern studs?<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Nashville bridges, also called modern Tune-O-Matic, have <strong>larger posts<\/strong>\u00a0compared to the vintage versions. When shopping for a new bridge (vintage or modern style), you have to check your posts and buy accordingly. There are <strong>adapters from small to large<\/strong> posts, as well as vintage bridge with factory-provided large posts. Just pay attention to this detail, in order to avoid problems when installing your new bridge.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Locking mechanism?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/tonepros.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>TonePros<\/strong><\/a> has a locking system on their bridges that allows you to tighten up two allen screws (on the tailpiece) and locking the stud (on the bridge part) in order to secure\u00a0the bridge firmly in place. A neat feature for re-stringing, the locking mechanism is advertised as a tone enhancer, providing more stability and better vibrations transmission to the guitar body.<\/p>\n<h3>Topwrap<\/h3>\n<p>Topwrap is a technique aimed at reducing the <strong>break angle<\/strong> from the string to the bridge. Some says it reduces string breakage, other says that it provides a slinkier feel and more sustain: you have to try by yourself to judge. Topwrap is an easily reversible technique, obtained screwing down the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/tailpieces_for_guitars.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>tailpiece<\/strong><\/a> into the body and let the strings poke through the\u00a0pickup side, wrapping around the tailpiece and then proceeding through the guitar bridge.<\/p>\n<h3>I can&#8217;t access the saddles screws properly<\/h3>\n<p>If your guitar has an ABR-1 style bridge, chances are that setting up the intonation turns out to be a nightmare. When the screws are facing the neck, is very hard to turn them with a screwdriver without facing serious difficulties. The best way to solve this is to turn your bridge 180 degrees and just set it up that way.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Final words<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to <strong>fixed bridge<\/strong>, is hard to take the TOM bridge out of the equation. Instantly recognizable, widely available, this little piece of metal provided <strong>solutions<\/strong> for countless guitarist, struggling with <strong>intonation<\/strong> <strong>problems<\/strong>.
