Ty Segall &#038; Fuzz War"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">In this edition of <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">HIT THE TONE<\/span> we will be discussing how to achieve the thickest, most powerful fuzz tone on the planet &#8211; as illustrated by ultra-prolific Californian rocker Ty Segall throughout his musical career&#8230;<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">??<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Is Ty Segall\u00a0really that significant?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In today&#8217;s world where everything seems to be so\u00a0<strong>ephemeral<\/strong>, few musicians &#8211;<strong>few artists, in general<\/strong>&#8211; seem to create a <strong>benchmark<\/strong> that will be <strong>remembered for decades to come<\/strong>. The case of this <strong>Californian<\/strong> is one of them. At just <strong>31 years old<\/strong>, Segall is becoming one of the most prolific musicians ever, surpassing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ty_Segall_discography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>thirty studio releases<\/strong><\/a> in only the last 10 years (<strong>4 in the last year<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>alone<\/strong>)!\u00a0His job is to take a large part of the music of the last 60 years &#8211;<strong>garage, punk, psychedelia, glam, noise, folk, hard-rock, blues<\/strong>-, mix it and obtain a sound that, despite the obvious influences, sounds <strong>very personal<\/strong>. His <strong>intuition for riffs and melody<\/strong> and his ability to surround himself with <strong>outstanding musicians<\/strong> complete a more-than-perfect equation. We&#8217;re talking about reinterpretations of <strong>garage punk, heavy metal and West Coast pop<\/strong>. However, it was considered that <em>Slaughterhouse<\/em> picked up the garage punk right where <strong>Iggy Pop &amp; The Stooges<\/strong> left it with <strong>Raw Power<\/strong>. But how does he get that sound?<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to a <strong>&#8217;66 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/alternative_design_guitars.html?oa=smb&amp;sw=mustang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fender Mustang<\/a><\/strong> and a <strong>1982 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search_dir.html?sw=Fender+Twin+Reverb&amp;smcs=593c63_779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fender Twin Reverb<\/a> Silverface amp<\/strong>, the great secret with which Segall got the &#8220;<strong>fiercest sound of the century&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>was from his distortion pedals, one in particular: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/death_by_audio_fuzz_war.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Death by Audio Fuzz War<\/strong><\/a>. The pedal was of such importance to his sound that Segall dedicated a song to it, to show the possibilities of a pedal specially conceived to &#8220;get the <strong>thickest fuzz sound<\/strong> ever achieved&#8221;. Tell me more, please, this sounds fantastic!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re talking about a company whose <strong>motto<\/strong> is to get pedals for &#8220;the <strong>noise creators<\/strong>, the <strong>revolutionaries<\/strong> and the<strong> experimenters<\/strong> out there&#8221;. Quite a statement of intent, no doubt. <strong>Death By Audio<\/strong> has developed artefacts such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/death_by_audio_waveformer_destroyer.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Waveformer Destroyer<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(a <strong>fuzz \/ filter \/ boost<\/strong> with four switches) or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/death_by_audio_robot.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Robot<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(an <strong>8-bit signal converter<\/strong>). A common denominator in all of their pedals is to <strong>take sound to the limit<\/strong>. And they always avoid any unnecessary features or technology: the majority of their pedals have <strong>two or three potentiometers<\/strong> and <strong>no more than two switches<\/strong>. <strong>No screens<\/strong>, convoluted <strong>interfaces<\/strong> or <strong>compatibility problems<\/strong>. Here&#8217;s another <strong>common idea<\/strong> behind Death By Audio: <strong>don&#8217;t overdo the effects<\/strong>, focus on your amplifier and, above all, your guitar. In some aspects, its sound is reminiscent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/electro_harmonix_bigmuff_pi.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Big Muff<\/strong><\/a>, but always in more forceful and aggressive contexts. In its various settings, this pedal may sound like an <strong>underwater beast<\/strong> or the <strong>shrillest bird<\/strong> you can imagine. So it&#8217;s no wonder it&#8217;s the favourite of people like John Dwyer (<strong>Thee Oh Sees<\/strong>), Christian Bland (<strong>The Black Angels<\/strong>), Shana Cleveland (<strong>The Light<\/strong>), Nathan Williams (<strong>Wavves<\/strong>), Elvis Kuehn (<strong>Fidlar<\/strong>) or James Peetrallli (<strong>White Denim<\/strong>). Given its great <strong>versatility<\/strong>, it is not surprising that it is also used by other musical trends such as Sebastien Grainger (<strong>Death from Above<\/strong>), Kevin Shields (<strong>My Bloody Valentine<\/strong>), Mick Thomson (<strong>Slipknot<\/strong>) or Graham Lewis (<strong>Wire<\/strong>). This pedal is no joke!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Okay, but how do I get that sound at home?<\/h3>\n<p>If you want to get close to Ty Segall&#8217;s sound in <em>Twins<\/em> and <em>Slaughterhouse<\/em> and you find it difficult to get a <strong>&#8217;66 Mustang<\/strong> -no one will blame you for it, seriously-, the best thing would be to opt for any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/alternative_design_guitars.html?sw=fender%20mustang&amp;smuuid=c9803d81-0e86-4f9c-93b0-3c9eaa65aec7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mustang<\/strong><\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/tube_guitar_combos.html?sw=fender%20twin%20reverb&amp;smuuid=33d0ec89-b0e2-4f01-8dcc-3f14c9e70a6a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Fender tube amplifier<\/strong><\/a> and one of the <strong>pedals<\/strong> most used by the Californian.
