A bassist of a rock band and a heavy metal DJ walk into a pub.\u00a0One says to the other: “Hey, we should organize a festival sometime.” And the other says: “Ok, let’s do it!” <\/strong><\/h3>\n

No joke, that’s how it actually happened\u00a0in\u00a01989<\/strong>.\u00a0Thomas Jensen<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Holger H\u00fcbner<\/strong>, who were regular “Monsters of Rock” and various other metal concertgoers, were attending the legendary Werner races in 1988. There they were inspired by its accompanying concert of 200,000 spectators where they soon realized that they wanted to organize a metal festival.<\/p>\n

The result: Year after year,\u00a075,000 heavy metal fans<\/strong>\u00a0make their pilgrimage\u00a0to a small town in Schleswig-Holstein with less than\u00a02,000 inhabitants<\/strong>\u00a0in order to enjoy their favorite bands for three whole days.\u00a0Megadeth<\/strong>,\u00a0Mot\u00f6rhead<\/strong>,\u00a0Helloween<\/strong>,\u00a0Judas Priest<\/strong>,\u00a0Accept<\/strong>,\u00a0Alice Cooper<\/strong>,\u00a0Scorpions<\/strong>,\u00a0Deep Purple<\/strong>,\u00a0Oomph!,<\/strong>\u00a0Steel Panther<\/strong>,\u00a0Kreator<\/strong>, Dream Theater<\/strong>\u2026\u00a0The annual lineup regularly includes the current who’s who of the scene.\u00a0Wacken calls – and they all come!<\/p>\n

When musicians believe in something and put their heart and soul in to it, they can achieve anything.\u00a0Often it is a rocky road, but with the power of music it can come true.\u00a0#ThePowerOfMusic<\/strong><\/p>\n

The beginnings<\/strong><\/h3>\n

But it didn’t start big.\u00a0On\u00a0the 24th\u00a0and\u00a025th\u00a0of August in 1990<\/strong>,\u00a0800<\/strong> visitors\u00a0found themselves in an old gravel pit\u00a0to listen\u00a0to\u00a0six bands: 5th Avenue,\u00a0Ax’n Sex,\u00a0Motoslug,\u00a0Sacret Season,\u00a0Skyline\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Wizzard<\/strong>. The bands\u00a0didn’t have as many fans as the bands do today, but they certainly had more playing time.\u00a0By the way,\u00a0Skyline<\/strong>\u00a0was the band from the bassist in the pub intro.\u00a0And even if\u00a0Thomas Jensen\u00a0<\/strong>no longer plays, the band still plays regularly in Wacken \u2013 except now it’s in front of a few more spectators<\/p>\n\n\t\t
