Its full name is the <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Roland Transistor Rhythm 808<\/span>\u00a0but it is most commonly known simply as the <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">808<\/span>. First released in 1980 and discontinued in 1983, this <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">drum machine<\/span> became legendary and continues to move listeners, dancers, DJs and musicians to this very day. He started out by repairing watches and clocks, building his own radios and constantly trying to improve the sound of the tubes inside them. He became obsessed with sound quality and started experimenting with rhythm machines. In <strong>1972<\/strong>\u00a0his obsession led him to start the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/roland.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Roland<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 company<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>with which he released the <strong>TR-808<\/strong> in <strong>1980<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">7. The 808 hits public ears<\/h3>\n<p>The first time the TR-808 was heard by the mass public was in <strong>1982<\/strong> when <strong>Kraftwerk<\/strong>&#8216;s song<strong>\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XMVokT5e0zs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trans Europe Express<\/a>&#8220;<\/strong> was interpolated by producers <strong>Arthur Baker<\/strong> and <strong>Afrika Bambaataa and released as &#8220;Planet Rock&#8221; (by\u00a0Afrika Bambaataa &amp; The soul Sonic Force)<\/strong>. People heard this and needed to get their hands on an <strong>808<\/strong>, and they did! Things get sexy<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>808<\/strong> was really heard worldwide when\u00a0<strong>Marvin Gaye<\/strong> wrote the instant classic <strong>&#8220;Sexual Healing&#8221;<\/strong>. Gaye was on a retreat in Belgium, feeling the need for isolation to escape his problems at the time. He somehow found an 808, locked himself up, turned <strong>knobs<\/strong> and pushed <strong>buttons<\/strong> till it sounded just right and sang the <strong>vocal line<\/strong> over the <strong>beat<\/strong>. Genres Created &amp; Defied<\/h3>\n<p>The 808 is famous because from its beats spawned many of the most <strong>popular genres<\/strong> of today. These include Hip Hop, R&#8217;n&#8217;B, Techno, EDM, Trap, Miami Bass, Detroit Techno, Acid House and Grime\u00a0<strong>among others.\u00a0<\/strong>The beauty of the 808&#8217;s beats is that they are like a secret ingredient for <strong>any genre of music<\/strong> to give it that extra &#8220;<strong>hit appeal<\/strong>&#8221; and this can be proven successful throughout its history.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">4. A flop at first<\/h3>\n<p>The 808 initially didn&#8217;t do very well. People didn&#8217;t like the sounds because they were too alien sounding, <strong>far from what a real drum kit sounds like<\/strong>. It didn&#8217;t sell much so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/roland.html?ref=search_prv_12\"><strong>Roland<\/strong><\/a> <strong>discontinued it in 1983<\/strong>. It wasn&#8217;t till the <strong>price dropped<\/strong> drastically that it got into the hands of more musicians and producers. People started to like and embrace the 808&#8217;s futuristic sounds and from there a <strong>revolution<\/strong> boomed<em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/xT39DdZ5gFZQzKU1jy\/giphy.gif\" width=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">3. Its competitors<\/h3>\n<p>The 808&#8217;s main competitors at the time were drum machines that had more <strong>&#8220;realistic&#8221; drum sounds<\/strong>. Finding the 808 today<\/h3>\n<p>Because of its limited production period (1980 to 1983) the original TR-808 is a rarity these days and can cost over <strong>\u20ac4000<\/strong>. Luckily, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/roland_tr_08.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Roland TR-08<\/strong><\/a>, a <strong>compact version<\/strong> of the original, was invented, and runs you only <strong>\u20ac322<\/strong>. Skeptical? The electronics are said to be a replica of the 808 and therefore outputs exactly the same sounds as the 808. The 808&#8217;s Legacy<\/h3>\n<p>The TR-808 has left behind some of the <strong>best records in history<\/strong> and has moved so many people, on dance floors and in their headphones, over the years. Its beats are still sought after in new productions, for example in 2008 <strong>Kanye West<\/strong> released an album called <strong>808s &amp; Heartbreak<\/strong> where the rhythm of every track features the 808.
