1. Hans Zimmer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hans Zimmer is undoubtedly one of the most successful film composers in the world. Born in Frankfurt am Main in Germany, he moved to London as a teenager, where he began his career as a keyboard player for various bands, including the new wave outfit The Buggles. In the 1980s, he began scoring films, already developing the elements of the style that would later become his trademark: a powerful blend of orchestral music and electronic sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He now also often uses software synths such as u-he Zebra, of which there is even a version developed especially for him. Hans Zimmer’s final breakthrough came in 1988 with the film Rain Man. After director Barry Levinson heard Zimmer’s soundtrack for Two Worlds, he hired the young composer, who was eventually nominated for an Oscar for his score for Rain Man in 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest is history. Hans Zimmer has produced the music for over 100 films, including The Lion King, Gladiator, Deep Impact, Meet the Fockers, Inception, and numerous other box office hits. 2. Jerry Goldsmith<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

American Jerry Goldsmith (1929-2004) composed more than 200 works. His best-known score is the music for the first Star Trek film, which was later also used for the successful series The Next Generation. Although he was nominated for an Oscar 17 times, he only won the award once, in 1977 for The Omen. With his romantic-melancholic, dark, and experimental compositions, he utilized the entire spectrum of the musical palette. Examples include Planet of the Apes, Chinatown, Poltergeist, and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goldsmith was considered a sonic chameleon, incorporating twelve-tone music into his compositions and pioneering the seamless fusion of electronic sounds with traditional orchestral arrangements. 3. Ennio Morricone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The legendary Ennio Morricone composed more than 500 film scores during his lifetime. The Italian, who died in 2020, became world famous through his collaboration with director Sergio Leone, with the music for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly combining electric guitars and dramatic screams as a motif for the howling of coyotes in the classic theme tune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other unforgettable melodies penned by him can be heard in Once Upon a Time in the West, Once Upon a Time in America, The Mission, Cinema Paradiso, and the film The Untouchables starring Kevin Costner and Sean Connery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Morricone received an Oscar for his life’s work in 2007. 4. Bernard Herrmann<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Considered a pioneer of suspenseful film music, Bernard Herrmann is closely associated with Hitchcock, having written the scores for Psycho, Vertigo, Marnie, and The Invisible Man, among others. He often used instruments in atypical registers, such as low brass or particularly high strings, to create dark or otherworldly soundscapes. He also experimented with electronic instruments such as the theremin at an early stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bernard Herrmann won an Oscar in 1942 for his composition for The Devil and Daniel Webster. Numerous other works mark his successful career and remain in our memory to this day. 6. Howard Shore<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Howard Shore has firmly established himself in our memory as a truly epic composer. After initially delivering masterful scores for thrillers such as The Silence of the Lambs, his definitive breakthrough came with his compositions for The Lord of the Rings trilogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having been awarded his first Oscar on the red carpet for the first installment, he later topped that with two Oscars for the third part: one for best music and the other for Into the West as best song. Shore’s trademark is his masterful use of leitmotifs, which run like a thread through the entire film or trilogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In \u2018The Lord of the Rings\u2019, for example, he used a complex network of more than 160 recurring leitmotif themes. For his soundtracks, he enriches orchestral sounds with ethnic instruments such as the tin whistle, harps, electric guitars, and metal percussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Danny Elfman<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Born in Los Angeles in 1953, Daniel “Danny” Robert Elfman became particularly well known for his long-standing collaboration with director Tim Burton, for whom he has composed the music for no fewer than 16 of his 20 film projects. However, that is by no means all he can add to his successful track record. In addition to film music, he has also composed theme tunes for television series. These include, most notably, The Simpsons and Tales from the Crypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danny won his first Emmy for the music for Desperate Housewives. Elfman debuted as a film composer with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. Danny Elfman had already composed the main theme for the film before he was officially commissioned, so he had a solid foundation to build on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elfman’s style is characterised by the intensive use of strings and brass \u2013 especially the French horn \u2013 as well as woodwinds and harp. He works extensively with DAW software such as Digital Performer and Avid Pro Tools, and synths such as the Kurzweil PC2x and Roland samplers. Incidentally, he is also a guitarist himself, initially playing a red 1964 Fender Jaguar, later a PRS Custom 24. Remarkably, he composes and produces his music despite suffering from severe hearing loss, according to his own statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. John Barry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

John Barry was one of the most successful film composers and arrangers of the 20th century. His trademark was an atmospheric blend of lush string sounds with jazz influences. He was one of the pioneers who integrated electronic sounds into film scores using the Moog synthesizer. One of his more unusual pieces of gear was the cimbalom, a hammered string instrument similar to a dulcimer, which he used for spy sounds in his films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Barry won numerous film awards during his career, including five Oscars. And certainly not without reason. After all, he not only created the sonic aesthetics of James Bond, but was also responsible for extraordinary scores like Dances with Wolves, Out of Africa, and Midnight Cowboy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, few film composers have left behind such an extensive legacy of unforgettable film music as the British workaholic, who also worked under the pseudonym Michael Angelo. Like most film composers, he started out as a musician himself. He had already caught the jazz bug as a teenager, even though his musical horizons had been shaped by classical music until then. In the decades that followed, the world was able to experience what can result from a symbiosis of these genres. John Barry passed away in January 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
