Without a doubt, the master of disguise has always been David Bowie. Whether as Ziggy Stardust, The White Duke, or Aladdin Sane, Bowie demonstrated the power of an alter ego to break free from prejudice and embody concepts that transcended music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, artists of all kinds\u2014bands, solo artists, producers, and rappers\u2014have embraced aesthetics that go beyond simple costumes: whether to protect their privacy, create a visual icon, or simply for pure marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kraftwerk – Vanguardia<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The pioneers of electronic pop and fathers of techno understood very early on that their music had a vision for the future. To emphasize this, they took to the stage in suits, with slicked-back hair, and although they did not wear masks, they did wear makeup to erase their human features, turning into robots. Their movements were mechanical and they hid their \u201chuman\u201d movements, turning each performance into a metaphor for the man-machine utopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents – Desconcierto<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No one knows who makes up this mysterious troupe, famous for their giant eye-shaped heads. By erasing any trace of personal traits, The Residents forced the audience to listen to the unexpected: their pieces were Dadaist-inspired sound and visual collages designed to disorient. Here, the mask becomes an invitation to abandon all logic and let oneself be carried away by the absurd. ThThey have always advocated that true art of sound can only come from being anonymous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kiss – Marketing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Kiss decided to put up their make up and wear those latex costumes inspired by Alice Cooper and the New York Dolls, they had no idea they would end up making a huge business out of it. Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and company invented a circus of painted characters: the Starchild (Stanley), the Demon (Simmons), the Spaceman or Space Ace (Frehley), and the Catman (Criss). Soon their iconic aesthetic would be on posters, T-shirts, comics, action figures, and even beauty products. With this, they proved that their business was not limited to music, but also to the fantasy they sold to the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mortiis – Fantas\u00eda<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge fan of the genre known as Dungeon Synth, and I couldn’t leave the man considered to be its father off the list. After recording his first album with Emperor, bassist H\u00e5vard \u201cMortiis\u201d Ellefsen left the band to bring to life a character straight out of a gothic tale, thanks to his iconic witch’s nose mask and robe. This was nothing new in Black Metal\u2014I could have named many bands, such as Immortal, Mayhem, or Gorgoroth\u2014but Mortiis was the first to fuse costumes, synthesizers, and medieval soundscapes into a total fantasy experience. His mask opened portals to dungeons and ruined castles, turning each of his albums into a ritual for traveling to another world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Underground Resistance – Resistencia<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the late 1980s, in Detroit, \u201cMad\u201d Mike Banks, Jeff Mills, and their friends began to hide their faces under black scarves and balaclavas, not to create mystery, but to reinforce a political message. In a city battered by deindustrialization and the social tensions of the post-Reagan era, Underground Resistance emerged as an anonymous collective fighting gentrification and racism with militant techno. Just as Public Enemy had done with hip hop, they wanted to attract young African Americans to techno, although the genre never fully caught on with that audience. Today, their legacy has transcended the genre: UR is now a legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slipknot – Ritual<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1999, nine eerie figures emerged from the smoke in Iowa, wearing red jumpsuits and masks as disturbing as their sound. Each member wore a different face\u2014from a latex mask with dreadlocks to a gas mask\u2014and a number tattooed on their jumpsuit, erasing any trace of personal ego. On stage, Slipknot offered a true ritual of collective catharsis, enhancing the feeling of a \u201chive.\u201d The anonymity of their costumes unified the band and the audience, and a sea of black T-shirts filled the venues, proof that their masked fury was also a magnet for the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, they moved on to Halloween masks and finally to robotic helmets inspired by pulp science fiction novels, which have made them immortal. The kitsch element provided by the helmets, accompanied by costumes and the shiny aesthetic of their videos, perfectly matched their music and was the element that made them the cultural icons they are today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buckethead – Virtuosismo<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Buckethead is one of the most peculiar figures in the music world. A guitarist who never speaks in public and hides behind an enigmatic white mask and a chicken bucket. Yes, one of those they use at KFC. His shows are spectacular: he uses nunchucks while playing the guitar, uses the bucket as a drum machine, and strums at breakneck speed. Behind that image lies a guitar virtuoso who has participated in more than 500 albums and collaborated with artists such as Iggy Pop, Mike Patton, and Guns N’ Roses. MF DOOM – Enigm\u00e1tico<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The case of MF DOOM is one of the most enigmatic in modern hip-hop. A rapper who never showed his face, always hidden behind a metal mask inspired by Doctor Doom from the comics, a true homage to the villains of ink and paper. Live, he maintained an almost ghostly presence, far from the typical theatricality of rap, but with a relentless cadence. Author of classics such as Operation: Doomsday and MM..FOOD, half of Madvillain alongside Madlib, part of Danger DOOM with Danger Mouse, and collaborator with Ghostface Killah, Bishop Nehru, and Thom Yorke. In 2020, illness took his mask away forever. And although villains always return in comics, in real life they also deserve their rest, and it was then that MF DOOM became a legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
