Hello New Gear – September 2024

Summer is almost on the way out and the manufacturers are once again releasing loads of new gear! In this issue, we have great-sounding microphones, legendary synthesizers, a drum machine, an ultra-brutal effects unit, a perfect keyboard for the studio, and a precision tube tester for you. Let’s go!

Shure SM4

While the new SM4 condenser microphone from Shure is specifically designed as an affordable home recording solution, it does not compromise on sound quality. The mic features a 1-inch dual-diaphragm capsule and a cardioid polar pattern. Thanks to the built-in pop filter, a frequency range of 20 to 20,000 Hz, and a maximum SPL of 145 dB, it is a great all-rounder for recording vocals and instruments. To eliminate annoying interference from mobile phones or other devices, the SM4 is equipped with Interference Shielding Technology that blocks RF interference directly! Behringer Proton

Behringer proved a long time ago with the Neutron that its engineers are also capable of coming up with excellent synthesizer designs of their own. Now the company is launching a new in-house development with Proton, a semi-modular, paraphonic analogue synthesizer. The Proton has 2 VCOs, 2 muti-mode filters, 2 VCAs, a large patch panel with 40 inputs and 24 outputs, and a fully analogue signal path. The desktop synth is very clearly laid out and invites you to tweak the sound! You can find all the details in the video below:

The Behringer Model 15 synthesizer is an authentic replica of the circuitry of the legendary modular synth built from 1973 until 1981. Its purely analogue signal path is based on the original VCO, VCF, and VCA designs. 2 oscillators with 4 waveforms, oscillator sync, pulse width modulation, a sub-oscillator, a classic 24 dB ladder filter, and an extended step sequencer provide an authentic sound and feel. And with no less than 48 patch points, the Model 15 is a real modular monster in a compact format. You just have to hear it, for example in the video below:
