Zoom R16 - for homerecording and on the go

woodheart, 09.10.2009
I find the Zoom R16 is a successful solution for homerecording. Here you can record 8 inputs simultaneously and the whole at 96 kHz and 24 Bit. The included Cubase 4 LE is enough to take first pictures.

Particularly successful, the internal effects can be added as send / return the inputs and the headphones output. Nice when you sing something and has some reverb on the voice without the Hallsignal then on the recording. Vermouth drops, which only works at 44 kHz. In most cases, however, I think it is anyway enough to record with this bit rate. The Zoom R16 is not supposed to be a replacement for a professional studio.

The fact that only two microphone inputs are supplied with phantom power should not be a problem for the hobbyist. On the one hand there are still enough inputs for dynamic microphones and on the other hand the built-in microphones can be used very well. You only have to find a good place so that the internal microphones of the R16 are at the correct height and at the correct angle to the recording. The mics are pretty good. I use the orchestral desk deluxe for this purpose; As shown in Fig.

The R16 is so very good to use and you have all the displays well in view. I use the R16 also to the operation of the DAW. 5 keys are freely assignable with functions, which are used more often. Transport control and track selection as well as the switching on of recording / mute / solo fold very well.

Not to mention that the installation of the R16 driver can be a bit difficult. Under Vista and XP it should work, but with Win7 (RC) one must already some tricks apply. I hope that ZOOM there with a driverupdate remedy creates.

As a standalone the R16 needs some time to settle, but then it can be relatively easy to use. So, without having to turn on the computer, you can quickly bring a few song ideas to the SD card. Also a tape sample is recorded so fast and you can mix demos, at least simple, with it.

I bought the R16 more for the homerecording and therefore can not say much about the standalone operation. But now and then I take some ideas with the acoustic guitar and use the internal microphones. This is enough to work with the imported tracks later in the Cubase 5 Essential.
Otherwise, I am with the R16 very satisfied.

An unbeatable price / performance ratio with this equipment and the range of functions.

The all-rounder for a small price for the band

Falk E., 27.09.2013
What he can do? Almost everything!

1) quickly record song ideas, eg via the internal microphones, which sound very good and even handle high volumes (rehearsals or gig of a rock band) without distortion, correct leveling!
2) record tape samples easily or in great detail with up to 8 microphones at the same time (when cascading 2 devices even 16 microphones)!
3) record guitar or bass directly and refine with many real official effects! He can even turn a guitar into a bass (in real time, so while playing), which opens up the possibility of writing a bass line songwriting without having to own a bass!
4) You can record a whole drum set with up to 8 microphones and thus mix differentiated.
5) You can record overdubs and then bounce to a track (also stereo) or the master track (always stereo).
6) You can mix in-the-box or via the included DAW.
7) You can record in the rehearsal room really loud and fat and then neighbors friendly in room volume cozy mix at home.
8) You can take it everywhere with you and take everything as it is really small (laptop size) and with Batt is really independent.
9) You can control the DAW (eg the enclosed Cubase) with it.
10) And you have with up to 24 bits and up to 96KHz a really official audio interface (but then only 2 in 2 out and none of the really great effects)
11) You have all the time in the world, which would be very expensive in the real studio, so you can try it out and do it to your heart's content and does not that make music as a hobby? Of course, there are even higher quality devices for each individual area, but they cost real money and are never so compact, versatile and mobile! A hobby band with the R16 has everything it needs, well, except microphones, cables, talent ... ;-)
12) And you can ... the possibilities are endless, only knitting can not. If you still want a drum computer, take the R24!

What we have done with it so far:

A) I have now recorded vocals on old instrumental tracks and the result is really impressive. A mixing in the box is fully possible and sounds even at "only" CD quality really official. Only Copy and Pace he can not, but that's the DAW.
B) Also, we've used it several times at the band rehearsal to record ideas and new songs. We used the built-in microphones. The R16 stand aligned on a conductor's desk towards the middle of the rehearsal room. Of course it was not demo CD quality, but every instrument and vocals (rock band) were clearly heard and the sound was considerable. Although we were really loud rehearsals, we could simply adjust the recording and record as distortion-free. At the time of cassette toaster recordings with built-in mic I would have sold the quality already as a demo CD, not below 5 D-Mark. A proper recording with single micros to create a modern demo CD is still pending.

What he does not like is, if you pull the power supply right in the middle, ups! Well, it happens in the heat of the moment. :-) I was still able to save everything in card reader mode.
I say buy !!!!!! ;-)

Addendum (26.05.2014): We use it for a while now for fast rehearsal recordings and finally I was able to record Schalgzeug to recorde a complete song. The result is really good. I used the micro-set "the t.bone DC 1200" for the drums, which proved very well. For small bands, the Zomm R16 is highly recommended.
