This is an exquisite sounding splash, my favourite sounding baby splash bought through Thomann to date. The sound is powerful, bright, and lightning fast-an energetic crash with a fast decay. Despite its' bright clarity, it works well where sensitive warm sounds are required too and sounds nice when "tickled" with brushes or hot-rod styled "sticks". It is characterized by a high standard of manufacture quality indeed although I love Paiste splashes and Sabian dark cymbals; the Zildjan "Avedis" range are all good too. I prefer this cymbal to many previous ones I've used, partly because it is so versatile.
Reminder: Mine arrived with it's own bag but it was a little dirty, so as with most cymbals it is a good idea to clean it to get the most out of its sounds unless you are looking for darker "wash" with more sticking coming through. So if recording this can be helpful to remember to get what you want from that.
For example, since purchasing it less than a week ago I have already had the chance to use it at 2 open- air rock gigs, one fusion styled percussion gig, a university concert within a theatre; requiring bright sounds, and a formal Church recital service in London (requiring darker warm tones & more gentle dynamics but where the cymbal had to cut through just enough). In the latter scenario it went down very well indeed with both the small orchestra/choir; the ticket holders: and even the organist (who proximity wise should have hated it!). On raw playback at the venue it had cut through nicely without overpowering or having to much of unwanted Chinese style trashy overtones for the gig. I didn't expect that from the cymbal it was a test of sorts but am pleased.
Is it worth Purchasing it?
I had so many positive comments about its sound even without the microphones in a selection of settings, that I recommend it for its multiplicity of use-you can't go wrong, it suits so many uses! Yes, it is more than worth it,the only downside is I will want another :-))
This has far more wash and brightness compared to the A-Custom Splash. The profile is identical, but the lathing is left intact, without any heavy polishing, just the protective lacquer? buffing compound? coating. This feels like a tough strong cymbal and sounds excellent.
