Great stagepiano

This piano in the usual (very good) Yamaha quality is finally the instrument I have been looking for a long time.
It has a very good sound (sufficient to also be used for large rooms) and a pianist's important, pleasant and sensitive keyboard. Normally these properties are found only in very heavy and expensive instruments.

Especially the relatively light weight and the compact design were decisive for me as a petite person, but I sometimes have to drag the piano over narrow stairs to church mules for weddings.

Lovely sound

I had a hard time choosing this piano. I buy it to play jazz / swing music in small groups and to play solo ambient piano. I need a light piano that can be mounted and played almost immediately. Also, I like to try a lot at home with my digital piano and to prepare simple rhythms and recordings, and not having to connect one speaker at a time.

Its first advantage is a wonderful piano sound (Yamaha CFiii) that comes out perfect without programming anything. It may help that it has 256 polyphony. It's the best sound I've heard on a piano so light that it costs less than 1,500¤. But if you want to make small adjustments, if there are some possibilities, and it does not take a lot of time to schedule the changes.

Its second advantage is that it has two loudspeakers of good quality and mounting. Sounds as loud as a small piano (but better sound) and without distortion and with much sound directed to the pianist. If you use an extra active speaker, it all sounds great. I no longer bring two speakers to the performances. I use one and sometimes none.

Its 10 beats are very limited, but I use them sometimes, and they are very useful anyway. It does not have complete self-reports, but it is not necessary in my opinion. That facility is more for keyboardists. The recorder and USB pen drive reader are very useful, but it's a shame that you can not do a wav recording from something already recorded in MIDI.
Actually this piano is very similar to my old Yamaha P80, but better, of course. It has the same number of sounds and almost the same total weight. The action is less "clunky" than the P80 but I find it hard to get used to it. There may be better stocks available, but not with the same total weight, I think. The Kawai ES8, for example, is very well estimated, but has 5 or 6 kilos more.

It makes me angry that the P-255 does not come with a half-pedaling pedal, and that it has no XLR outputs. That's why it's not a full stage piano (the CP4 is more appropriate for the stage) and it's not for keyboard players who want to use a lot of sounds and effects. Electric piano sounds and vibraphone are weak. The screen could be better and the app for iPhone or iPad seems absurd. It is less fun to use the piano controls themselves, after memorizing the FUNCTION numbers on the screen. The app does not offer anything special, and is not compatible with iPhone4. Who wants to dedicate a modern iPhone or iPad to his piano?

The P-255 is not barrato, and I have to say that Yamaha has not been generous with the extras. Seriously, the P-255 is not the best value for money. But I love their piano sound, and I think it's a very efficient instrument and good for pianists like me.

I had great difficulty choosing this piano. I need an instrument I can play in jazz / swing combos and can also use for playing piano background music. It has to be light and easy to set up quickly. I also need to practice on my digital piano. Built-in speakers and recording facilities are an advantage for me.

The P-255's first advantage is its awesome basic CFiii grand piano sound. This sound is perfect for most applications (without any tweaking) but you can make some little adjustments if you like. It is the best piano sound from an instrument costing less than ¤1,500 and weighing less than 18 kilos.

The second advantage is the excellent in-built speakers. These are efficient, distortion free and well positioned for the pianist. The P-255 sounds as loud as a small upright, but with a nicer sound. If you add one extra active speaker you have all the range and sound you'll ever need, but sometimes you might get away with no extra speaker, even on some gigs, for example, while playing background music. There is certainly no need for separate monitors unless you're on a very big stage setup.

The ten rhythms are very limited, but still useful. There is no full auto-accompaniment, but then this is a serious piano, not an arranger keyboard. The recorder and USB thumb drive are very useful, but it's a shame that you can not record in wav after you prepare your piece in MIDI. So you can only record wav in real time.

This piano reminds me a lot of my old Yamaha P80. It does the same job, but much better of course. It has the same number of sounds / voices, and about the same weight. The P80 GHE action is clunky, but still very good. The P-255 GH action is smoother, but takes some getting used to. Still I do not know which I prefer. In my opinion, both systems are better than GHS, which most recent models have had, so Yamaha has come full circle in a way. There are probably other digital pianos with better actions than the P-255. The Kawai ES8 action, for instance, is much acclaimed, but that piano weighs five or six kilos more, and it may have other disadvantages.

It bothers me a lot that the P-255 does not come with a half-pedaling sustain pedal and that there are in the XLR outputs. It is not a complete stage piano (as is the Yamaha CP4) nor is it suitable for keyboardists who want many sounds and effects. The electric piano and vibes are weak. The screen could be better and the iPhone / iPad app seems absurd. It's an app made for dummies, because it does not mean that you can not more easily from the consol, you've memorized the screen's cryptic numeration. And who wants to dedicate to modern iPhone or an iPad to their piano? The app is not compatible with the older iPhone4.

The P-255 is not cheap and (unlike most other brands) offers few extras from the basics, but it has a killer piano sound and is really easy to use, except for the screen issue. Indeed, this is not a value-for-money instrument, but it's great for pianists like me.
