An AMD for clear sounds only

AlexandreM, 27.11.2015
The Bellwether is an improved Deluxe Memory Man (Electro Harmonix). The chorus function is present with the possibility of deactivating it and it includes the basic knobs of a delay to which is added a tone. Few delays have this essential function which allows to correct the tone of the repetitions (and therefore to adapt to any type of guitar). It's a big plus. The Way Huge Echo Puss and Supa Puss have it, as is the SolidGoldFX Electroman, which is a Canadian copy of the Deluxe Memory Man. Basically it's a bit like having the two MXR Carbon Copy, the classic dark toned, and the new bright tone model in one pedal. With all the subtleties between these two extremes.

The tap tempo is here with a switch and a knob that allow subdivisions like on the high-end delays like the JHS PantherCub. The latter is a direct competitor to the Bellwether since these two delays are among the most expensive on the market. They are too expensive. But the manufacturing quality is there. It is impeccable. The Bellwether also offers two outputs for dual mono.

Like the JHS PantherCub, the Bellwether uses a standard 9V power supply against the 24V negative tip of the DMM that requires two 12V power outputs and a special Y cable (Voodoo Labs sells). So it's much more practical.

Like the PantherCub, the Bellwether has an input for an expression pedal and an input / output (insert) for a Y-jack that allows repeat processing with another pedal. I tested with a 90 EVH phaser, it works well.

But like the JHS PantherCub, the Bellwether strongly impacts the signal level. The latter falls after treatment. Which makes for me an excellent delay in studio, and only in studio where you can recover volume on the settings of the amp before the sound. It is not a pedal for the live. Unless you use a dedicated amp in which the delay is permanently engaged. Or, but I have not tested, add a booster and insert both pedals at the same time in a looper switcher. Both take a delay that does not chuetr like the Way Huge Supa Puss. But that does not sound much more mat ...

Especially the Bellwether is not made for saturated sounds. I tested on audio industry standards: Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier 2 channels from the 90s, 3 channels from before 2010 and the current 3 channels, Bogner Ecstasy 101A 20th anniversary, Friedman BE-100, Marshall JCM800 from 1982 And Diezel VH4-S. The Bellwether can not handle big distortions. For that you have to turn to the Boss DM2 Waza Craft and the Way Huge Echo Puss which are the best in this field. On this point, it is less good than the pedal that inspires it, the Deluxe Memory Man, which shines in clear (it is best for that) but that also accepts big distortions with brilliance. A DMM in a 1995 Rectifier ... it's just huge.
I'm not a fan of Fender combos, but I would say that this Walrus will suit them better in front than big 100W stacks with the best effects loops on the market.

What is certain is that even if this delay is very complete, it is very well made and it sounds good (with the clear modern sound of the Diezel VH4 is great for prog rock), it Does not do all the work. He will have to add a Way Huge Echo Puss for example to treat the lead sounds, and a Jam Pedal Delay Llama for the crunch (which also drops the signal).

So, although I do not regret my purchase at all (I collect the delays, I had to!), I find it really too expensive. It is even the most expensive of all.
