This right here is a great amp!

12.09.2016
As probably most of you.. I was looking at this amp as an alternative to the real legend of an amp the AC30. I however chose this because considering the beast that a full AC30 is I wouldn't of had where to actually crank it up and make full use of it. I couldn't really justify spending that much money on that amp. Why? because I play guitar a lot, but most of my time is spent playing at home. That would mean that it would require maintenance and a lot of tube changes as I play hours upon hours every day.(I don't also live off of music yet so I'll wait until I do for the full valve AC30) And couldn't crank it since my neighbours would probably call the police after a week of that. I wanted something is firstly reliable, not cheap.. but not overly expensive, less heavy then the AC30 and most importantly sounds good!

I'm saying all that to give you an idea on why I chose this particular amp.

PRO's:
-This amp sounds good. It just does. Sound close to the real deal(that's kind of how VOX invisioned it to be anyways)

-Sounds great straight out of the box.

-Nice playing dynamic with the tube. It feels good playing it.

-Works well with pedals, using my GT-100 in manual mode with some OD reverb etc. and it just sounds great! If I plug my guitar straight in... sounds just as great

-Has 2 channels. Clean(this is how I use it most of the time) OD1 and OD2. OD1 is basically a crunch and OD2 is more of a high gain type deal. Clean, sounds amazing, OD1 has a very retro sound(at least to me) but I really enjoy this. OD2 sounds decent but I've never been a huge fan of high gain sounds, and you probably wouldn't use a VOX if you were into more of the metal genre, I'm guessing.

-Well built/designed. This looks like it's bigger brother. It's gorgeous I'm loving that old vintage look for the amp! The panel is very nice, straight forward, also has master + channel volume so you can really crank that tube up at lower volumes. Built like a tank. Not exactly light but lighter then it's bigger brother.

-It's LOUD! I used this live next to a bass amp, an acoustic amp piano with a monitor, 2 voice monitors for the singers and of course a loud drummer right behind me. The settings were as follows. Channel volume was just a bit over 0, to get the cleanest tone without cranking the tube. Master volume was at about 1 o'clock. The amp was turned away from me, I was basically sitting to the side of it, around 1.5 meters away. I could hear every note clearly, soft picking and everything with all the band going crazy at once and I was the loudest on-stage(I did so to test it out,) That being said my neighbours have not called the police yet but I feel like cranking that volume up just so those speakers start moving some air and start soaring! Poetic I know. So you can gig with this thing 100%

CON's:

-It's still heavy. Not the lightest amp, but manageable. I'm not the biggest fellow around so I need two people to carry this just so it's easier. BUT lighter then it's bigger brother. Has 3 handles so you can really grab hold of it and haul it around.

-Decent reverb, not the worst ever I prefer using my unit's reverb.

-No tremolo, would of liked it to have a nice tremolo circuit built in.

-OD2, I'm not using very high gain stuff. It does sound decent again but I would of much rather of preferred to ditch it completely and add that tremolo.

-Not as responsive as the full valve amp, for obvious reasons! It's only one tube, that anyways, does an amazing job at keeping the VOX AC30 tone anyways. Not to say that it doesn't have a tube feel.. because it does and it still responds well. But it's different. Duh.

-Shipping was weird this time, while I usually get very good packaging and such from thomann, this time I got it only in it's box, which had 2 very large cuts on 2 of the sides from other boxes hitting it probably. However the amp was fine with no signs of any damage!

Now to end this (quite extensive I think) review.

This is a great amp overall! Sounds good, build great, looks the part! If you are looking to use this with a bunch of pedals it's great value for the buck! Clean channel is great, almost the same as the real deal. Crunch is nice, I love playing with it, and OD2 is decent enough to pull of some metal!

I hope this helps! I would recommend this to amp!

Good sound at a good price

CarlK, 01.10.2013
Clean channel sounds great - almost as good as the full valve AC 30. It doesnt pack quite the same power as a full valve amp, but its overdrive channels are quite tasty, nice retro crunchie sounds. Its also very durable, my one lives in a rehearsal room and is used and abused by many bands, but never caused any issues :)
