Nice guitar but poor quality control

22.05.2016
I am playing the guitar for many years and have played a good number of guitars.

My style is primarily heavy metal and hard rock, but I would say that this guitar is suitable for most styles.

In general, it was very pleasant to play and the sound was very good for its price and the looks were very good as well. I would prefer some more clarity for playing acoustic style songs, but overall I would stick with the built-in pickups for a long time.

The neck was very comfortable, considering that I am used to thin RG SuperStrat style necks. The action and setup as set from the factory was acceptable but some tweaking might be necessary.

I did like the looks of the guitar a lot, however the headstock was quite different to the one depicted in the listing's photos, where instead of white inlays, everything was printed with gold paint that made it look cheap. Check the photos of listings of other V100 guitars, e.g. faded tobacco, to get an idea of the actual looks.

The major problem I experienced, however, was that the guitar came with a scratch mark on the 11th fret, most probably a manufacturing defect that should have been identified in the factory. I have therefore requested a return from Thomann and I am waiting for their feedback. Probably won't buy a Vintage guitar again, at least online, due to poor quality control.

A good alternative!

Mathieu H., 17.01.2012
First of all I have to say that I had in my possession two Epiphone including one paul. I was initially attracted by the somewhat original aesthetics, notably the "Iced Tea" flamed finish, mechanical type "tulip". That reminds me of the original Gibson. In the end I was not disappointed.
This vintage v100 is at first rather nice for its price. The varnish is well applied, no special concern at this level there. The same applies to the inlays of the handle. But when we look closer we must admit that the finishes of the frets and blinding of the neck are not top top. Compared to the finishes I think we can find better in the competition. But apart from that, the rest turns out to be good or very good.

The problem of the guitars at the economic price is often the electronics. Here everything is of good quality. The knobs and switch work well and do not spit. I changed the mechanics because one of them vibrated and made a very unpleasant noise. But they kept the agreement.
The handle has a very fine and pleasant C-shape. The key is slightly varnished and the bends slide easily. On the other hand I must say that I was a little surprised to see that there was no factory setting (strings action, harmonics) and that the strings were to be thrown on the field. But once the settings are made, we are satisfied with the result.

Sound level, it is rather nice and typed "PAF". In clean, the neck pickup has a very warm and wrapped sound easily adaptable to jazz, pop and blues. The bridge pickup is almost acoustic in its sounds. By combining the two microphones one obtains very nice results in arpeggio as well as with funky rhythms provided to use a suitable pick and to dose well the attack. Indeed, the sound is naturally compressed. I think this is due to the ceramic magnets used instead of the usual AlNICo.
The crunch is pretty good and is conducive to good old rock and hard rock but playing with volume and tone can get pretty bluesy sounds.
In distortion, it reacts well. Even if it is not adapted to very heavy aggressive saturations it is however possible to play a little heavy metal and drift towards a typical shredder sound. The sustain is quite important.
Finally this guitar is quite versatile and reacts really well when using effects. Notably the wah which is very expressive. These Wilkinson pickups are therefore very powerful. I would say they just lack a bit of dynamic sound.

In any case I am very satisfied and I think that I do this choice again without hesitation.
