Looks great on the outside but poor on the inside

12.02.2016
Having just put this beast of a piano together (with help being 130kg) it looks very nice (after you polish off all the residue from all the sticky tape). Polished Rosewood would be very nice but have to be realistic; it is not feasible to have a whole host of different colours/finishes on each product. Saying that, polished black does have a kind of sexy look about it.

Firstly, I will address the issues in putting it together.

The three legs and the pedal platform need to be bolted to the frame. The bolts are quite thick giving you confidence they will not break or bend under the weight of its body. You get a great 'sliding' socket to tighten them; three for each leg and two for the pedal pedestal.

There are two thin 'brass' bars that attach from the pedals to the piano frame. These are very tricky as the pre-drilled holes do not line up. Also, while the holes in the underneath of the piano body are the correct width, the ones on the pedal pedestal are too thin. I was only able to attach these bars with one screw each instead of two; that is not a problem as they are cosmetic and serve no actual purpose other than to 'look good'. A phillips-headed screwdriver is also provided for these so in theory you do not have to get the toolbox out.

The pedals connect via an Ethernet-type connector to the underneath of the piano.

Next, I turned it on only to be greeted in Chinese. I don't know if you can change this as there is no manual or instructions provided. You do however get a small multi-lingual card stating a manual can be downloaded from [LINK] *Update* I have now been emailed the instructions; a 52-page pdf file. It covers how to connect the legs etc and what functions the buttons have.

I spent nearly two hours trawling the site but had no luck. I did send an email asking to be pointed to its location but as usual, no reply as yet (I only had a response after 4 emails regarding another issue).
*Update* I received a 52 pdf set of instructions the next day covering everything from connecting the legs etc to what functions the different buttons have.

Now to the sound. There only appears to be three different piano voices with this model; grand, bright & honkytonk (not counting the electric types). A few more would have been nice considering its main function is a piano. There is a nice sized colour screen that shows you the name and number of the selected voice and to the left side, transpose, tempo, ACMP and style variation (A or B). The screen while not appearing to be TFT, is clear enough to easily run through the settings you want to change (pitch, split point etc). I haven't tried this as yet, but you get a USB SD card reader as there is a SD card slot in the piano. This is for reading and playing midi files.

Comparing the piano voices 'grand' and 'bright' to my 9 year-old Thomann DP-75 is no contest. The DP-75 easily comes out on top. The rhythm styles really are extremely poor and weak as are all the other sounds/voices tested.

There appears to be either a fault or badly sequenced styles on this model. They are recorded in 8's. The sequence restarts on the 9th beat. Unfortunately, there is a slight delay making it sound as if you stopped and re-started the rhythm style. If you change chord on the 3rd beat, the backing arrangement doesn't seem to cope fully and you get part of the previous chord still played as well as the changed chord. I will be dropping Thomann support an e-mail hoping mine is a faulty model and not the whole batch having this fault.

Having recently tested a Yamaha DGX-650, it would be like comparing apples and oranges. The Yamaha sounds wonderful; the rhythm styles have a nice 'fatness' to them and the piano voices full.

A neighbour has a small Casio CTK-3400 (cost £139) and so I set it up next to this to compare and I'd say there is very little difference in sound quality.
When you consider this DP-495 costs £860 more, to say I am extremely disappointed with how it sounds would be an understatement.

I may be a little unfair here and if I am wrong, I apologise but think there are no sounds recorded online to play as many other models have since it would, in my opinion kill any sales of this model.

My conclusion.
If you are looking for a nice piece of furniture and don't mind how it sounds or you intend to run an external MIDI box through it, this might be for you. If you want something that sounds great with many useable voices and styles then look at the Yamaha or Korg alternatives otherwise you will be extremely disappointed. You are paying the appearance not the electronics.

As I am in Wales (UK), there is no option to return it and so it is going to be advertised for sale and I'll keep my DP-75. Unless you are able to visit Thomann and hear/test it for yourself, I'd strongly advise buying something else.

Here you get a lot for your money!

A super friendly Thomann team, a comfortable purchasing process and a 3 years manufacturing warranty complete the overall picture.

Many sounds and a simple operation over the large color display sweeten the playing & dive into the colorful world of the music of an E-Pianos.

The look is simply the hammer & you can not see enough of it or a guarantee for captivating glances of visitors, family & friends.

Many beautiful and meaningful hours are now spent with this piece of jewelery and one is always happy to play anew.

I can recommend this flagship from Thomann only to anyone who would like to get a lot in the relationship little money.
