A versatile high quality recorder

21.02.2016
I needed a compact and capable recorder for a classical music performers club, and the DR-680 is exactly that. It has 4 XLR and 2 TRS jack balanced mic inputs with phantom supply, these sockets also allow line inputs. Digital in/out is supplied via RCA sockets. Recordings are saved to an SD card which can easily be interfaced to a computer. Line outputs can give individual channels or a stereo mix. There are a large number of configuration options which take some learning, but the manual is clear and well written and includes a helpful block diagram. I have used it in a live concert with excellent results, also digital recordings from radio 3 via satellite. It is highly portable and can run on 8xAA batteries, even with phantom power. I have no previous experience of this type of device, but would recommend it.

As good as perfect

Andreas4584, 21.07.2016
Small and handy, takes up to 6 microphones (all with phantom power 48V), very good processing, very intuitive operation.

The Tascam runs with power supply or batteries (8 * AAA, batteries have to be charged with an external charger). At the audio quality, I can not put anything, it is finally a reasonably built, digital device. The input noise does not interfere with relatively low-noise microphones (large diaphragm or eg Rode NT5).

The only drawback are the connections for the micros No. 5 and 6, for reasons of space there are only jack sockets, no XLR sockets as for Minkros Nr 1-4. These jack jacks are also quite close together so that the jack plugs should not be too thick, max. Approx. 16mm.

All adjustable parameters are input via rotary encoder, there are two, one on the top of the device and a small one on the front panel. The recording level is also adjusted, so there is no potentiometer in the signal path during recording. Only for the headphone level, there is a potentiometer, should the slacken some time and start to turn "turn", affects only the headphones, but not the recording.

Up to two channels, recordings up to 192kHz sampling rate are possible, for more channels up to 96kHz. Also adjustable are sampling rates of 48kHz and 44.1kHz. The word width can be selected between 16 and 24 bits.

The price for a 6.Kanal recorder is really cheap, for my older 2-channel recorder from Tascam I have paid more than 5 years significantly more. I guess, this recorder will probably hold similar for a long time, the old recorder is still flawless and the new looks from the processing almost still something higher quality.
