Very light 88 note keyboard

JosepS, 17.12.2017
Is the tidiest, neatest 88 note available. It's light, comes on fast, has speakers built in for immediacy, and actually sounds pretty great, especially for the money. It has a simple split/layer function too, which is very useful. Bear in mind, of course, that this is not a fully weighted board (that would be impossible at 7kg! It's nearly a third the weight (never to mind the price) of my Nord Stage, but would function reasonably well as a temp backup if anything happened to mine.

Overall, not convincing

Andreas700, 18.09.2017
I was looking for a compact USB MIDI keyboard with 88 (light) weighted keys, a solid-sounding choice of basic sounds, 2 controllers, in a compact case for a fair price. Of course I had nothing against built-in speakers.

The new Numa Compact 2 appeared to be a suitable candidate. After a few tests, however, I let the device go back because it did not convince me.

My criticisms:
- Sound of the internal speakers: I did not expect a hi-fi sound, but the things really sound very "quacky". This is also reinforced by resonances in the plastic housing. The instructions even say that you should not turn up the volume knob too far, otherwise it can lead to distortions. Here the manufacturer should have invested 20 ¤ more. So playing on the internal speakers makes me any fun anyway ...

- Since the level of the line output is coupled to the volume of the speaker, you can silence the built-in speakers connected external speakers only by plugging a (headphone) plug - for me very impractical. Why is not there a dedicated switch like other manufacturers?

- The velocity response of the sounds is, in my opinion, uneven and insufficiently matched to the keyboard. A natural feeling does not want to adjust and every now and then even single tones stand out unpleasantly.

- The sounds are not unusable, but the basic sounds (eg Piano, Rhodes) did not convince me. Also the choice of variations and effects did not appeal to me. For example, I find Roland's RD64 more convincing.

- The user interface of the menu did not immediately convince me. I did not bother with the manual, but I think you should be able to use the basic functions intuitively.

- right after unpacking already a key rattled, not a good omen for the future of the keyboard ...

- The joysticks are clearly too small and fiddly for me - so that I can not control musical parameters in authenticity organically.

- The overall processing is quite "plastic". Of course, so the weight should be kept low, but still I would have expected something more value for the price.

Some of the points of criticism can certainly be fixed by a firmware update (I had V1.00), but the hardware will remain the same for the time being and thus also the associated weaknesses.
