Great Bass

18.01.2017
I don't think there is an acoustic bass guitar on the market with such a powerful unamplified sound as the Stanford Robot. Really nice, deep and satisfying to the player. You get to hear the bass loud and clear from the soundhole which is positioned close to the player. Amplified sound is not bad either with little feedback, but with just a single tiny fiddly volume adjuster on the soundhole, I miss control over the tone directly from the guitar. There is no strap button on the heel which I miss, but these are minor points when you get used to this really nice instrument. I would go so far as to say the Robot, with its large body and solid bracing pattern, facilitated by the unusual positioning of the soundhole, is the only acoustic bass I have played which can hold its own unamplified, in an unplugged session with other acoustic instruments. I think it has been designed primarily as an acoustic bass where it is at its best. I also like its quirky looks. I detected a bit of fret buzz on the E string and a fair bit of fret noise, but I think this is par for the course on this type of instrument.

Development

Yanluk, 12.07.2014
Coming from the guitar (nylon strings), I bought this bass in the hope of getting a nice acoustic sound with the possibility of amplifying it if necessary, to play in the jazz and blues spirit.

Delivery impeccable as always, the instrument is perfectly packed and it arrives on the day said.
What strikes first with the Robot 4 is obviously its design: very original and sober. Then the quality of the wood and the sharpness of the manufacture, except on one detail: one of the mechanics is not perfectly aligned with respect to the head. Damage to a relatively expensive instrument. No fastening is provided for a strap, but I sit seated.

The beginnings were difficult. The bass was delivered with strings Elixir nanoweb (precision given by Thomann at my request) which sounded terribly metallic and shiny. I tried to assemble nylon strings, without success (the pull was apparently too weak).
On the other hand, returning to the original strings it "crimped" all over the treble. Adjusting the handle with the truss rod did not really help things.
I finally returned the instrument to the after-sales service as part of the warranty. He returned quickly, and transfigured! Comment by technicians: "neck adjusted, frets dressed, new strings mounted. Indeed the bass now expresses its qualities.
The new strings are made of nickel-plated steel. The action is a bit high but I finally have a beautiful sound, rich and deep: the case sounds remarkably, a bit like that of a good classic guitar, with a long sustain and a lot of harmonics. "Unplugged" is nice. And electrified? I just bought a Galien Krueger MB 110 amp (which I will not fail to chronicle), and the couple thus formed sounds very, very well from the first tests.
Attention, it should be pointed out that the Nautilus Spectral electronics offers only a volume adjustment: the equalization is done on the amp, or on an equalizer to be added in the circuit. But the quality of the sound is there.

Appearance: beautiful bass, with a devastating look and big potential. But be careful: everything must be perfectly fine. And do not forget that on an electro-acoustic bass, the choice of strings is of enormous importance.
