Good desk - better than DMX Master I

Thomas142, 08.12.2010
Have me before well 2 months on the search for a good and favorable light for my LED Par64, Comscan LED, ... made, I rummaged tens of days on the Internet and to the end I landed at the STAIRVILLE DMX MASTER I. After several Hours of the herumprobiererei I then came to the decision that this is not exactly the yellow of the egg. So again off the Internet - after again tagelangemm searches I stumbled over the STAIRVILLE LED COMMANDER 16/2 (appeared at that time completely new - delivery date also only 3 weeks later). So returned the DMX Master and ordered the Commander. One thing in advance: I did not regret it!

Processing is completely identical with the DMX Master I (unfortunately also the film description)
The Commander measures 1U more. You can control 16 devices (addresses freely assignable - max. 10 per channel including Pan & Tilt). 16 scenes and 16 chases + flash button per channel & USB port - what more could you want!

A function which the DMX Master I has, but the Commander is not the override button. This is really a pity that they are no longer there.
Scenes are added to the chasers, so it is possible, for example, for a running chaser for LED Pars which actually only runs in red, adding another color. Od. A strobe effect to add (strobe goes of course only if the par headlights dominated the house).
This must be programmed in the respective scene.

The I think is the greatest change compared to the DMX Master I:
No matter if you are working with chasers or scenes, whether in the manual, auto or music mode, the Fade Time always works - so it is possible to make manual scenes transitions somewhat softer or in the music mode simply a fade time of 200ms And already these transitions are softer - and this looks really top (music intensity is also adjustable)!
Especially since it seems as if they had the Commander a faster processor donated, which accomplishes every fade task without jerks!

For more complex shows with scanners, moving heads, ... I work with the Enttec Open DMX USB and Freestyler. For LED par spotlights ists, as I think, the best light under 300EUR.

LED Commander vs. USB interface

Andreas796, 21.04.2012
Here's my equipment and a little review:

6x Stairville LED Flood TRI Panel 7x3W RGB
1x Stairville Stage TRI LED Bundle Complete
1x ADJ Revo Xpress

1x Stairville LED Commander 16/2
1x Enttec Open DMX USB Interface

So I have the ability to control either via Freestyler or via the controller.

The programming of the controller was a bit "difficult" for me at the beginning. But once you understand the operating concept, then it works. Programming scenes is not a problem. At the programming of running lights, I'm still not daring - appeared to me for the required purpose, first too cumbersome / time-consuming - so in good German said do not mind ;-)

The installation ran smoothly. I was able to get the additional 3-D simulation program running on one computer - not on the second. I did not look any further. In the Freestyler forum there are a lot of fixtures (which are in principle info files for the connected devices), but you can also create relatively easy ones yourself.

Sound-to-Light:
With the controller, I use the built-in devices function by the corresponding channel via DMX set. That looks quite "ok". However, I can not regulate the brightness here. As far as I understand it, this is only possible if you have previously programmed the individual steps as "Chase", which are then called in succession to the beat. But I did not take the time for that.

The USB interface is more beautiful. Sound2Ligt is possible both via the laptop micro, as well as via the VDJ plugin. The brightness can be controlled nicely by the humming-control. Disadvantage: Since I have a Madrix fixture for my 4-bar, the lamps always flash in the same color. Will that possibly change, by applying a separate fixture for each spot. But I only tested it at a party in live use.

Advantage of the console: you can operate everything without having to quit software.
Disadvantage of the desk: Programming quite expensive.

Advantage of the interface: simple programming, visual presentation of the stage. Brightness can be dimmed
Disadvantages of the USB interface: You have to switch the program to use the software. If everything runs on "Sound-2-Light", that should not matter. Much worse, I think: if you disconnect the interface from the laptop or shut down the software (because you have to restart the computer) no signal is sent and (my LED bulbs anyway) then go out all! Whether this is the case with other interfaces or other lamps, I do not know. I always thought that in this case the last value is retained ...

My conclusion: At big, important events I will definitely let the light control on the second laptop! For "normal" weddings I use for now only the 4-bar with the foot switch. Maybe I'll do the next time additionally the control via USB. Then I can still switch to "manual" with the footswitch on a restart. However, I have to press a button for DMX operation then at the bar ...
