Subtle quality increase
Well, I'll record my own piano music at home. In the evening I mix and finalize the material. I can not work with monitors; That bothers the whole family. So far I had a - for my circumstances - ordinary headphones (AKG K 271 Mk II). But so far it was hard for me to compare the result with professional CD's. After careful consideration, I then added this headphone amplifier - along with an even better headphone (Shure SRH 1450). The expectation was that I then my recordings can properly evaluate and compare, without ever have the downmix to the HiFi system to have to transport. Result: Well, yes. After the first set-up of the new set-up, the expected quantum jump will initially be lost. When switching between Matrix On and Off is nothing to hear ... or is it? Something has changed, but what? Multiple CD's and mix-repeats later, I think to identify stronger differences between matrix mode on and off. Headphones dropped ... Wait, the usual deafness is not there! Ah, there is something different. After several days of intensive use, my favorite setting is as follows: Crossfeed: High, Angle 22 °, Center Off on CD listening, -1.2 dB when mixing. Conclusion: The SPL Phonitor Mini works subtly. If you expect a spectacular effect, you will be disappointed. But for me the hearing has improved. The super-stereo effect and its adverse effects on multi-hour headphone sessions is clearly suppressed. And that was worth the investment. Oh yes, still what the technique: What I like very much, are the two inputs and their switchover by switch. This way, I can listen to both my CD player and my mixer setup (PC + audio interface). As others have written in their reviews irritates me also a little, that one must always the output (or the whole device hold) must, if one the Kophhörer plug would pull. A bit like that, there's a feeling of fear, you could break something. You have to be careful. Welcome in the past, where you had to be careful, which device of the peripherals around the PC you should turn on / off as first / next / last :-)
