Roland FP 60 and FP 30

For many years I have been owner and for a long time I was a relatively purist supporter of "real" acoustic - also historically relevant - keyboard instruments (piano, harpsichord, clavichord). When I decided to get my first digital piano / stage piano for mobility reasons in the 1990s, it became a Roland, because it said samples of genuine Steinway grand pianos were used there. Compared to the then rapidly spreading Clavinovas and Stagepianos of Yamaha, whose perfect-licked-supersaturated-metallic sound philosophy, derived from the own production of acoustic grand pianos, I already felt - and still today - as relatively lifeless and therefore did not like The piano samples by Roland consistently very satisfactory. For a short while I had been toying with Kurzweil, but then I found the keyboard rather unsatisfactory and preferred to leave it alone.

Today I own a Kawai ES 8, of whose consistently positive reviews I have been guided to buy it untested, a Roland FP 30 and most recently the Roland FP 60th Of the Kawai I was rather a little disappointed, because the piano samples, as in Yamaha, only from their own acoustic instruments that follow a similar, if not so extreme sound philosophy, and because I also the widely praised keyboard is not so. It may sound a bit less professional, but the Kawai keyboard is a bit too lazy for me.

By contrast, the keyboard of the two FPs from Roland is perfect for my feeling. You can feel the mechanical processes in your fingers, feel the pressure point, which puts the mechanics under tension in acoustic grand pianos and pianos before the hammer is "shot down", as well as the mechanical sounds do the rest, to a nearly perfect feel to create. The fact that the sound of the pianos, especially the Concert Pianos, following the dynamics of the attack, varies from "warm-soft" to "overtone-hard" completes the authentic feel of a living (Steinway?) Grand piano sound.

The latter is only conditionally for the built-in sound system; the highs and mids are very good, the basses a little too "slender" and weak-breasted, whereby the FP 30 even performs better than the FP 60, whose 12x8 cm loudspeakers radiate only upwards, because of its bass reflex openings at the bottom. In conjunction with good PA systems, which I also use in my basement studio at home, or with good headphones, which also allow nighttime playing, these slight tonal limitations are only of minor importance. In the sound development of the built-in system, however, the Kawai can score; here you need - at least at home - no external gain to unfold the full volume of sounds. That's why the Kawai is "only" in my living room, by the way, because it's too heavy for mobile use. Since I prefer the 14 kg lightweight FP 30 from Roland.

It certainly stands out that the other sounds and the other features of all 3 instruments play no role in my rating. In short: the sounds vary from very good to ok, but with me at most from time to time "just for fun" use. Only the possibilities of the "Piano-Designer" with the Roland FP 60 and the even more differentiated "Virtual Technician" at Kawai, with which the piano sounds can be adjusted to the individual preferences or the local conditions in mobile use (but usually do not have to), come towards me as "only" pianists. I do not need everything else.

In summary, I can say: who superficially wants to play the piano as authentically and uncompromisingly as possible and who can not or will not put any (Steinway) piano in the apartment, who perhaps attaches importance or is dependent on a certain mobility of the mission, is with the excellent keyboard and the excellent sound of Roland at the time most convincingly served. I did not find anything better. By the way: I am "only" amateur.
