Time against the RME "Hype"

Andreas, 10.10.2012
RME is regularly jubilated by the trade press, and in many places rightly so. Therefore,

- The converters are top
- It has the lowest latency of all
- it has (probably) the most features in the smallest space.
- it's just the box when you play live with computer effects ala Guitar Rig or Main Stage, while still doing the rehearsal room mix and still want to make a multi-track recording of the session.

Just the egg laying wool m ...

But if you looked more closely, there are also things that are not so beautiful:

The internal effects for example. So with the dynamic section and the EQ I make for live times a hook is better - but is for live OK.

Only then:

The hall is simply times underground bad and you have to screw quite well to get anything different from Early Reflections. Almost useless. Even the oldest Behringer crates could do better. I do not understand how you can deliver something like this today ... Therefore also a star print.

Well, then the echo. Is actually OK - unfortunately, unfortunately, many important parameters can not be set:

- Cross-feedback error. (Bumped eigendlich with the ping pong delay)
- Beat Syncronisation: Missing
- Tab Tempo: not available

Just to name a few things. I mean is not tragic, comes then from the calculator, but you pay a considerable extra for the "X". There should then be something in there which deserves the name. And with RME even more ...

But it goes still further. Let's get to the remote:

OCS -Super, MackiControll - even better, remote socket synonymous well, only then _DIE_ a small question: "is the synonymous Stand Allone operation - thus without computer turn?" Would be possible thanks to MIDI In / Out and remote socket but without problems ...

If you have fun, go to the RME forum google ... I just say Oh Oh ...

Well and then there would still be the mechanical structure:

- Jack jacks are not screwed to the housing - any movement goes to the circuit board.

- The connector of the MIDI adapter and the remote are - let's say "special". I think times because of the built-in depth one has decided for a copy with about 4mm (!) Plug-in. As a result, you think the plug is broken because it does not go further. Then one becomes clear - that must be so, and then one understands: crap I need a strain relief - because just as fast as the plug is in it is also outside again.

- The screws for the rack brackets (special accessories ...) are too short. Do not match the angles.

So all in all, I have to say: Goes actually also better - at least what the effects, the remote and the mechanics. But you have to be able to increase even more ;-)

If you can not do without the above-mentioned features can not pass the UCX (or larger).

Not cheap, but good ...

Jan419, 25.11.2012
The UCX can be THE SOLUTION if you have - like me - problems with its Win7-PC in connection with the FireWire card.

My FireWire card (one with a price of 650EUR also not exactly cheap brand product, manufacturer-side to my DAW) caused permanent crackers and misfires. Also when you play back recorded wave files.

After a really informative consultation with an employee of the responsible Thomann department (thanks again for the detailed explanations!) I ordered the UCX of RME - not without skepticism! It was planned to connect the part not via FW, but via USB 2.0. And somehow I could not even imagine that USB 2.0 the FW solution looks old.

But so far (after about 2 weeks test phase) I am really satisfied.
It does not crack, it does not rust, and I had no longer misfires any more.
However, 1100EUR are a rather handsome price, in which one should expect a good or very good measure of functionality.

Only the accompanying rackmount kit, which is available as a financial "extra" - that makes a 9-inch-wide sound card a 19-inch-capable rack solution, is again an absolute usury with a further 34 EUR. After all, this is only two "sheet angle" with holes, which are painted gray and printed with a blue "RME" lettering. The only advantage: the card is well stored in the rack!

Conclusion on the UCX:
Who can and will the invested price can and will not be, with a certainty, not be disappointed!
