Presonus Eris 44

12.12.2016
I bought these after reading a few reviews, to replace my old hi-fi speaker/amplifier combo (well specced kit but getting a bit old now)

For reference I am using Logic X via a Focusrite Pro 24 DSP, into the Presonus Eris 44 monitors using 1.5m TRS to XLR cables. I predominantly record guitar based music with a mixture of distorted guitars via a POD XT Pro, acoustic guitars recorded with a mixture of dynamic and condenser microphones, and a four string bass. Occasionally I do classical style string/horn arrangements and some EDM.

The speakers straight out of the box were way better than the equipment I was using before, and WAY WAY better than I was expecting. They are reasonably priced studio monitors, with comparatively small mid bass drivers (albeit, two of them in the MTM configuration) so I expected them to be flat enough for demands of my small bedroom studio, but the clarity is beyond what I expected, and the tight, controlled bass is surprisingly extended. I guess the main reason someone would consider the D'Apolito driver arrangement of the Eris 44 is because they are looking for reasonable bass extension without having a huge box on their desk/stands, or moving to a midfield monitor design and considering the small cabinet size, they do this extremely well. So much so that I have rediscovered the joy of composing and recording the low B sting on my 5 string bass (used straight through a Sansamp Bass DI).

Rock is my normal musical taste and these speakers do the job well, as they do with classical style instrumental arrangements; nice and clear and spacious, but I had lately started to mess around with electronic music, using keyboards and drum machines, with not a lot of success. It would seem that my old setup was just not punchy enough. These little beauties have no problem coping with the punchy sounds you can get out a drum machine.

Maybe they sound a tiny bit recessed with recorded male vocals, but I that is only when comparing side by side with K701 headphones. I suspect they E44s will take a bit more running in before they reach their best.

Lifting these up to ear height and turning them on their side really bring the sound into very clear focus, and I urge you do this with these speakers to get the best out of them, or at least angle them upward so they are gunning straight at your ears.

Interestingly, a friend of mine visited when I was unboxing them, and he has logged serious amounts of studio time both in front of and behind the desk, and after listening to them for an hour, out came his credit card and he went straight online and ordered a pair for home! Praise indeed...

Good alternative to 2-way boxes

29.02.2016
I was looking for small monitors for my homestudio. Musically I produce in the area Trap / House / Dubstep / Hiphop. After several rehearsals in music shops I had the following boxes to choose from:
Monkey Banana Turbo5
Mackie MR6 MK3
Yamaha HS7
Presonus Eris 44
For me, the Mackies and Yamahas because of the size out, much too bulky to place them on my desk. The Presonus and Bananas I have tested at home and especially the bass reproduction of the bananas for 5.25 inches is enormous. However, these are also quite large and have the bass reflex opening on the back. My boxes have to be relatively close to the wall, which means that there are frequency superimpositions. The Presonus Eris 44 with a base area of ??18x18cm are pleasantly small and deliver a very nice stereo image with very low ground noise. The double arrangement of the mid woofer I feel as an advantage, since the mids are really very linearly reproduced but the loudspeakers nevertheless can serve as normal Hi-Fi boxes. Only the bass reproduction is by design (4.5 inches) quite low, but I will still take the appropriate sub of Presonus. The workmanship is impeccable, everything sits firmly, also to convince the illuminated logo white.
