Good alternative to Dominant
saviour g, 16.05.2013
I bought this string to compare with the Dominany wound-on string. Seems comparable but not particularly better.

Violin: 4/4, Emil Barth, 1952, Sohl near Bad Elster, value approx. 3000, - ?,
Bows: Martin Fuchs (also Musikwinkel?), About 200 ... 400, - ?,
Colophon: Kaplan Artcraft (dark)
The "bright sound" of the instruments typical of the "musical angle" (and of the time) makes one look for alternatives. For once an older French or Italian violin is heard, there is now the desire for such "great sound". The purchase of one of these instruments is due to the outstanding lottery win so far ;-), which is why one of the first affordable alternatives is: string changes.
The last string set "Thomastik Infeld IR 100" (red), medium tension, G string: silver on composite, A and D string: Hydronalium on composite, E string: gold steel, brought the hoped for sound change / increase to the somewhat "warmer" character, a bit quieter, but overall balanced. The E-string with gold coating let abruptly and completely unexpectedly recognize a brilliance of the instrument, which inspired.
Why did you switch to the "cheaper" E string now?
The quality of the bows is not enough despite fresh stringing to be able to play the gold string permanently clean / paint: 'pp', 'p', even 'mf' is immediately with the often described "Pfiepen", a completely "hoarse" , unclean sound when painting the string acknowledged. An 'f' and increases are not a problem, quite the contrary, the instrument wins, shines, clean and balanced. But unfortunately only then; tried bows, which accomplish this in the 'pp' on this instrument, cost from 800, -? ... 1.500, -?
The silver-coated E-string brought the temporary, acceptable remedy: tonal on this instrument and the Infeld IR 100 - set fittingly, the addressing of this silver string in the 'pp' takes place immediately with the first coat of paint. Of course, no comparison to the balanced blasting of gold strings, but for the amateur orchestra the more practical alternative: "warm and balanced", clean response, 'pp' playable, great. But the price-performance ratio is excellent!
It remains to be seen whether a gradual loss of quality will be noticeable (coating?) Or the string will be stable for a long time, hopefully? (After winning the lottery, however, the gold string comes on again, with a new bow ... ;-)
