Have these mics now for some time and am still enthusiastic. For this price Octava offers basic microphones, which do not have to fear the competition of more expensive mics.
Especially crispe highs are not the strength of these mics but rather on the contrary a round full of almost warm sound.
So they are particularly suitable if it is not to maximum definition, but to swell, which should sit well in the mix, but should not have a solistic function. (Which does not mean that the mics are useless, but there are more suitable ones). Successfully I used the mics as overheads, where they make a pretty good figure. When recording acoustic guitar I have achieved particularly good results. Chello did not convince me 100%. However, choral recordings sounded very well. At a distance, I found the application at the bottom of the snare and at the hi-hat, where they are slightly shrill, and the signals are slightly rounded. Also live I have used the microphones frequently, with Neumännern I would not take the risk.
All in all, they are microphones, which are convincing despite the low price. You will always find an application. Practical is the wooden box, in which also a small stereoschine purely fits. It is worth mentioning that the stereoset is perfectly matched to each other.
Oktava Mk 012 Matched Pair - for me the best in their price class
DORA Music, 04.04.2012
I have purchased the Octava Mk 012 in addition to 9 other stereo pairs (Earthworks QTC 25, Neumann KM 184, AKG C 451, AKG C 391 B, Beyerdynamic MC 930, Audio Technica 4040, Audio Technica AT 4041, Audio Technica AT 3031, And Sennheiser E 614). So I have in the studio different microphones for different fields of application ready.
While the Earthworks QTC has the highest resolution and the best impulse response, the Octava Mk 012 is the perfect solution for all instruments. Regardless of whether they are placed in front of a choir, guitars, flutes or whatever ... they never sound bad.
The Oktava managed to make some of the instruments that I have given them a bit "nice". Where other microphones sometimes sound sharp and pointed, the octaves still sound balanced and round.
As far as impulse behavior is concerned, they are also noticeably slower than others. Used on the right instrument (where it does not depend on extraordinarily fast impulses), they do their work excellently.
Conclusion: If you do not want to spend 500 euros or for a single microphone, here gets around 300 euros two good sounding microphones. In this price class I currently know no better mics.
