Handy sound sound box with huge spa factor

Octapad, 07.05.2011

Im Studio oder live, am Rechner oder am Gerät, aus Spaß oder in der Produktion, in allen Situationen spaced der Ultranova mit inspirierenden Sounds und flüssiger Bedienung. Gemessen an der Preisklasse ausgezeichnetes Instrument." data-mt-lang="en-x-mtfrom-de" data-translated="Novation was a great success. After I have only played hardware Rompler and software sampler and only used an analogue software synth with presets from time to time, I had the intention to experiment with an analog screwdriver in hardware. And this can be achieved with the Ultranova with excellent sound quality, super processing, first-class feel, great equipment and liquid, clear operating concept.

But in turn. First of all, the first-class and high-quality workmanship impressed me. The pleasantly compact plastic housing is very stable, the blue is darker and looks nobler than on the pictures and the controls are clear and well labeled. The controllers are stable and handy. The keyboard is high quality and excellently playable, as I am already used to from my NOVATION REMOTE 49 SL MKII. All buttons are illuminated red when activated, so you know with a glance what is the matter. They feel rubberized and are therefore very grippy, as well as very large with a large distance, as well as the controls. So no fumbling. A special gag is the blue illuminated wheels. Together with the red status LEDs and illuminated pushbuttons, one already has a visual highlight which inspires inspiration and fun. The supplied Schwanenhalmikrofon feeds the Vocoder in good quality. In addition, the large, clear and easy-to-read display, you can start.

And that's where we are at Ultranova's ultimate operating concept. I find it phenomenal. The modules of the sound generator are directly selected via buttons. Immediately one is in the corresponding menu and the parameters are shown in the display, a maximum of eight. If there are more parameters and this is almost always the case with the lavish furnishing, you can scroll through the page buttons, which indicate by their lighting whether forward and / or backward is possible. The displayed parameters are changed via the eight controllers. And since the clear arrangement of the module buttons follows the signal flow, you program the sounds with warp speed. If only a numeric block for direct value input to top.

The same principle is used to select all device settings directly and quickly. This is also the case in Automap mode, where you can use the Ultranova as a mid-controller for softwaresynthes.

With the three oscillators, the 72 waveforms and 36 wavetables, the two ring modulators, the noise generator, 3 LFO's and the 6 envelopes, 2 filters and 5 effects in all possible combinations, I see infinite sound worlds. Then chord function and arpeggiator, programmed as quickly and easily, there is movement, especially with the latch function, which plays the played keys in endless loop and thus a sound cosmos can arise. In addition, the ample controls with the huge modulation matrix for so-and-so in real-time, there comes fun into the game. In addition to the ontouch onboard, the touch sensitivity of the 8 knobs is unique, which can be used to fire direct sound variations only by tapping.

A total of 4 banks A to D with 128 memory slots are available for the sound storage on board, A to C with presets and Bank D for own creations. The sounds can be classified according to genre and category and can be found quickly with the browser integrated in the device.

And with the sound quality of the blue wonder box, browsing through the sounds is just as much fun as varying these sounds, creating your own sounds and experiencing live experimentation with this funkbox. The Ultranova takes you into fantastic sound worlds, sometimes soft, sometimes heavy. The key features of the Ultranova are the powerful, powerful keys and bells, cutting leads, gripping percussions, crunchy or droll basses, atmospheric surfaces and dreamy movements. He articulates clearly and sharply, but through voicing and polymode he can also become powerful. In both cases, the high-quality effects contribute. Unfortunately, it is only monotimbral, so that live can only be performed one-by-one, which is not enough for perc / drumsounds. In addition, the sound stops when the sound changes.

Everything is there at the end: MIDI trio, sustain and foot pedal, headphone, power supply via the supplied power supply or USB (also a USB cable is included!). The Ultranova offers a complete 2in / 4out audio interface and an SPDIF output. All connections can be directly configured via the described operating concept. Using the two inputs you can enrich the sound generation. With the USB interface it also fuses with the PC.

After downloading the software package from the Novationite and the problem-free installation of drivers and tools, the PC (with me Windows with Vista) has a (further) audio interface. In Cubase, the Ultranova editor can be called up immediately as a plug-in. All sound programs and device settings can be done and saved on the screen. The "Librarian" is also available as a separate PC tool for sound management, which allows you to manage your own sound folders and banks, and to load them between the device (Soundbank D) and the PC. Browsing through the sounds corresponds to that on the device as described above. And for the comfortable remote control of sequencers and plug-ins you install the Automapsoftware, which is also to be downloaded at Novation.

In the studio or live, on the computer or on the device, for fun or in production, in all situations, the Ultranova ranges with inspiring sounds and fluid handling. I'm still learning...

Case, 13.04.2012
... with the Ultranova, but so far it meets all my expectations. The operation is intact, if you run it StandAlone over a mixer and directly into the DAW as audio plays.
Negatively noticeable me is the integration and configuration as a plugin in Logic over USB (MacOS 10.6, Logic 9.1 with current Novation software pack). Since I know better, could not convince me - the UN-SettingsPlugin + Librarian is however to be recommended.

For the jamming, the Ultranova is very little to use, unless you have a second instrument or a DAW at hand - as a student in the group (for which I bought it), it is ideal for my purposes.

The Ultranova can be a bit different from anything and also a bit more than just "good" - who would like to have something similar, "dirty bass" & Co. Ex works and in terms of functional range smears can take, I would advise to Microkorg (not XL). I strongly believe that I can not slow down and a Microkorg in the next weeks over the Ultranova as a perfect supplement stands. :)

Haptics: anything but "analog", but functional - the Ultranova is modern and also wants to come over with the touch. I had until the first try some panic before the sensitive rubber fingers - they feel in Natura but more robust than in various videos to see. The typical analog click sounds are obtained at the UN but definitv, never-ever, nowhere.
The presets are ok, but after 1x play you will immediately want to screw - well, also works (and who wants already recognizable strange sounds in the track ^ ^)!

The bottom line: a good device for musicians who want to play in a modern way and want a moderate synth that can do something of everything and that also well. I do not want to miss him now, just under one week. But: 1 octave more would not hurt at the Ultranova. And I miss a bit of bite, which Microkorg offered me (in the meantime, hour-long sessions in the shop) ... and I have both played long before the purchase. The bottom line, however, I would probably buy more cheaply when buying from an expensive, who mastered both in perfection.
