Music helps change lives!

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Thomann are donating a whole shipping container of musical instruments to help children in Haiti. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Thomann donate instruments to children in Haiti
The Foundation of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, itself also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, has teamed up with Thomann to donate Ä70,000 worth of music instruments to school children in Haiti.

The sheer number of instruments being donated means there'll be enough to equip entire orchestras and ensembles. The donation includes string instruments of all sizes, woodwind and brass instruments ranging from saxophones and trumpets to bassoons and concert guitars by leading brands such as Roth & Junius, Startone, Schreiber, Thomann and Jupiter. The donations will allow kids all over Haiti to make their own music.
The shipping container carrying the instruments began its long journey of several weeks in Nuremburg, Germany in December, and reached Port Au Prince on 9 January. The transport costs were met by the Swiss transport and logistics company Panalpina. Having passed through Haitian customs the container was passed on to UNICEF who is helping distribute the instruments to three Haitian schools.

The instruments are being passed on to three schools with the help of UNICEF.

With all the challenges and problems currently faced by Haitians, the idea behind the donation of these instruments is that children and young people have the opportunity to express themselves creatively, helping them come to terms with the effects of the recent earthquake. Music is a vital part of Haitian culture, and popular song has always provided a channel there for worries about hunger, the fight for independence or the catastrophes that have befallen Haiti over the last few years. UNICEF has told us that Haitian children grow up with this form of musical culture. The kids at the Vision Nouvelle music school were overjoyed when they were the first to receive their new instruments (see photos). The children attending the Louis Bayard Achilles Othello and Dessaix Baptist Jacmel schools will be getting their instruments in the next few days.

These music schools aim to help the most disadvantaged members of Haitian society, giving street kids and youths from Haitiís slums a new sense of self-confidence. Children from poor families are provided with musical training to a very high standard. Before the recent earthquake, the Vision Nouvelle School, for example, became renowned through its ex-students going on to take part in international competitions.

For us at Thomann itís been very important to help people who are a lot worse off than we all are here in Europe , and to help ignite a spark of hope. But of course this is no quick-fix solution. Although other events have dominated the headlines since the earthquake, UNICEF is still calling for donations worldwide to help rebuild Haiti. The road leading out of the ruins will be a long and difficult one. Find out here about how to help and whatís already been done.
