Morley VAI-1

Bad Horsie's Steve Vai Wah Pedal

The "Bad Horsie"-wah was developed precisely according to the ideas of guitar god Steve Vai. The most obvious feature is, of course, the fact that the pedal does not need to be switched on. As soon as you step on it, the wah effect is activated; when you take your foot off, the normal sound comes back. Since Mr Vai prefers the wah for heavily distorted sounds, the Bad Horsie is fine-tuned for precisely these sounds. Typical for Morley: the noiseless electro-optic potentiometer and the built-in buffer that prevents signal loss due to long cables.

The best Horsey!

Pavels R., 11.07.2013
I've got the wah-wah for five years at the moment and it's the only one part of my rig that haven't been changed thru the years. You may ask me "Why?", but belive me it's the best wah pedal I've ever tried. The first main thing about it is the quality. I rehears very often (three times per week), I have a lot of gigs per month, 3-4 times in a year I'm on the road with tours and there was no problem with the pedal ever. It may work on one battery almost forever, for me it works about 1-2 months on one battery. The sound, it depends on your taste, but I really like the "nastiness" and a little bit more aggression, comparing it to others pedals. Used it on two albums and I plan to use it on the third one. P.S. The touch on/off system is amazing, I'll never use knobs anymore.

Be the first

Hind, 05.11.2009
In the search for a first "nice" Wah pedal about 7 years ago, the Morley fell by the simple activation by means of foot pads. The name "Vai" was not a buy criterion at that time, because I am not going to be musically warm with the good Steve - but this is a different topic.

At Thomann on the spot I tested the Boss PW-10 (Modeling-Wah), as well as the classic CryBaby against the Vai-I. I liked the CryBaby sound in the sound, while the Morley Vai-I produced a very dominant Wah sound, which is particularly popular with Sololinien. The boss Wah fell off clearly against the two tonal.

The Morley is clearly superior to the Boss and Dunlop. The part is simply superstable and very massive built. In the 7 years of his mission (4 of which also live on the stages of the Republic), the Vai-I has never let me down and still performs his service excellently. On the other hand, my music colleagues had several problems with the jacks or some capacitors of their CryBabys.

The wah is very intuitive to use due to its straightforward construction. The control path of the "wah" sound is relatively long and even, which invites you to experiment with numerous sound facets.

Tonal, there are clearly more classic competitors from Dunlop or VOX. The Morley Vai-I is a sound-interesting alternative, which has a modern sound character, but you will not find this classic rock sound. Slightly moistened, the Morley sounds very scooped and triggers the whole to the end of the pedal in a wonderfully fresh Wah-Bling. Even with fat humbuckers, the sound is always quite clear and also breaks the thickest sound walls because of its cutting, powerful sound.

Conclusion: Does not make every guitarist happy, but is a high-potential workplace with great value for money.
