A great option for live vocals...

Briony, 14.04.2014
The Mooer VEM Box is a cost-effective option for anyone looking for a good quality stomp-box vocal processor. Obvious alternatives include the Boss VE-20 and the TC Helicon VoiceLive Play, but both of those units cost quite a bit more, and in truth, aren't necessarily worth the extra pennies. The question is; does the VEM Box perform as well as its more expensive rivals?

Build Quality:

Where Mooer appear to have predominantly cut costs is on build quality, with the unit being made mostly from plastic. That said, it is a nice looking machine, and the stomp-box foot switches are made from metal, so should be strong enough to take some regular stomping. The volume/expression pedal feels okay, although not exactly on par with a decent quality guitar pedal.

Features:

The unit is versatile in that up to 8 effect modules can be chained together to create your own sounds. Modules include PREAMP (with Compressor, Boost and Noise Reduction etc), TRANSDUCER (with distortions, Megaphone, Fuzz etc), EQ, MODULATION (with Chorus, Flanger, Tremelo etc), HARMONY, DELAY (Digital, Analog, Mod, Tape and Echo), REVERB (Room, Hall, Plate etc) and VOCODER (which can only be used by itself).

There is also a 16 second looper included, which can be used effectively with practice, and a guitar input for those without a dedicated pedal board. Additionally, the unit runs on batteries or can be powered by the included 9V DC power supply (or any other centre minus one for that matter).

Unfortunately, there is no onboard phantom power, and the unit lacks an XLR output; meaning that for regular live use, a DI Box is recommended for total flexibility. Also lacking is a pitch correction feature, but to my mind, that is a good thing!

Performance:

In use, the VEM Box performs pretty well, especially for the price.

The PREAMP module is useful, with EQ, Boost and Compression making quite a difference to your mic signal. The noise gate, is quite effective too, but it can be a little heavy handed when monitoring through headphones.

Working out how to program and save your own sounds can be a little daunting though, and Mooer's user manual is quite confusing to be honest. Also, to switch between editable parameters, you have to rotate the dial to the correct position - which in low lighting is difficult to say the least. In short, make sure you do all your programming at home, and if you need to tweak things on stage, make sure you have a torch handy!

Sound:

For live use, the VEM Box is a decent sounding vocal processor. The reverbs sound good and the delays are really quite flexible (with the longest time being up to 1.5 seconds). In this respect, Mooer's unit outshines the Boss VE-20 in my opinion, and generally speaking, the sounds are more organic sounding.

There are a few gimmicky effects of course, but all sound decent enough, and even the pitch shifter is quite impressive.

Overall:

The VEM Box delivers quite a punch for the price. It sounds just as good (if not better) than the more expensive alternatives, and makes it difficult to see any logic in spending more on a floor-based vocal effects unit. With a stylish (albeit plastic) look to boot, Mooer have given vocalists (and singer/guitarists) a useful and compact pedal to enhance their live performance.

not bad

ionral, 09.07.2014
not bad, it does its job quite well and also has many effects, some with quality, obviously worth what it costs, but especially live, is very useful and is no less than a product of much higher cost. only flaw is the unbalanced output and the expression pedal is not very fluid
