Mesa Boogie Grid Slammer

Guitar Effect

The amp maker from California also builds pedals. These are all highly interesting, and there is no need to discuss Mesa Engineering's processing and quality. But what can their pedals do, and what makes them different?

The Grid Slammer, after the Throttle Box, is the most evil of the Mesa Boogie pedals. There is enough gain for almost anything, but the mids are clearly in the range of classic rock sounds: harmonic overdrive in all variations! The tone control can be used to tame the treble, from light crunch to classic rock sound, an immense variety of high quality sounds can be produced.

Moderate, and round ... and then somehow green.

OliK, 23.01.2013
Well, but everyone was curious when the ads of MESA / Boogie came out, in which the Grid Slammer with its 3 siblings was announced. DIE also build pedals ?!

This is how I felt, of course, although I am not really known as a proven MESA / Boogie fan. But that is all the taste and another story.

In addition to my established pedals, I've been looking for a slightly different "taste note", which can be well resolved, yet something can press and feel amplike. Speak dynamically as a good nonmaster marshall reacts to the way of playing.

Now to the device. - The outfit is made from the top very nice. The black / silver relief plate looks solid. The floor cover, however, looks irregularly and on the round housing corners rather pointed over the housing contour. This is not nice, but it does not affect the sound ...

The housing is also quite high with 4.5cm without / 6.5cm with buttons and switch. Due to the blue-green effect lacquer, the aluminum glimmers metallic, which gives the pedal a somewhat cheap-kitschy note for my taste. But that too is a matter of taste.

... and how does he sound now?
Well, you can tell the Grid Slammer its origin from the house MESA / Boogie already. This very certain kind of sober transparency in the upper centers clearly indicates the family affinity. - I had made the tests anyway, the sound times without this "Oh Mesa / Boogie !!!" Awe to judge. What with me, see above, anyway is not given. ;-)

The degree of drift can be controlled very well with the stop. Really very amplike! Well done. The pedal needs some level, however, to "get going". Shall the Paula come well, Strat and Tele need support. HighGain is not his thing. But classic rocking is good. Also Sololinien in the high layers come still beautiful juicy and stable, and possess nevertheless with a beautiful transparency. The basses are slightly less pronounced. This helps against mud in the deeper layers.

In the middle distortion range, the sound shines beautifully and humbucks get a nice present note. Also a good Tele rocks with it.

The tone control is still to be used even in the case of a legal attack and generally has a very wide band and for my taste always musical. Very good.

Heights round, basses less pronounced !? - Did not there ever be something like that?
Right, and yes, somehow green is the MESA Grid Slammer too. :-)) Still, he did not sound typical of Tube Screamer. Rather broader and finer.

I think MESA Engineering has found a very good, own way here for a classic application. This pedal makes you want more and I could well imagine that the sound can establish itself as a new flavor.

I'm not going to send him back! .. and because of the sound, not because of the name.
