Martin D35

Matt T., 27.06.2013
A fantastic instrument, the D-35 is unsurpassed in its ablilty to blend its sounds and plays brilliently. Its is great for both rhythm and solo playing. The sound is full, especially the bass. I would definately recommend it.

Satter sound - and yet different

DocR, 08.08.2017
The D-35 I have after a few months of experience with a Martin D-28 added. Of course, the D-35 is like all Martin guitars of the "D-Series", which I have tried so far very cleanly and is delivered with a practical form-case, in which the instrument can safely be stored and transported. When opening, a pleasant duftwolke - towards "new guitar". So, as far as it is clear, it was rather a problem, a D-35 to try to get, since this is nevertheless in the distribution despite a similar price behind the D-18 and D-28 stands back. In Treppendorf there was a copy, which was requested from the friendly seller from the camp. It also ensured that I could try and compare the D-35 and the D-28 in the exhibition room in a quiet room. As always great service!

Why buy a D-35 if you have a D-28? The answer is simple: because they sound really different. The constructional differences between the D-35 and the D-28 can be easily found on the internet by means of appropriate research. Of course, the three-part rosewood bottom, the binding on the neck, and the missing volute at the transition to the head plate are evident. The D-35 purchased from me is very well dressed and is good to play, but you can expect from Martin and with regard to the price, as well as that the ceiling has a fine and uniform structure, the saddle is not jammed and the tuners are stable.

The "Aha effect" came to me when I first played a Bluesgrass-G-Chords in the screening room. The sound is - as already often described and shown in videos - in the low frequencies clearly denser and more oppressive. There is simply more bass there, the centers stepped back slightly and the heights are similar to the D-28. As if the guitar had a "loudness" button. This is of course fun, both at Bluesgrass, also with Old Style Folk Carter Picking or direction Neil Young, Bob Dylan and not to forget Johnny Cash. He has played D-35 and the boom-chicka accompaniment is good. Also the capodaster insert works, test stone is here a Beatles song, in which one needs the Capo on the 7th Bund so the sun rises. Some acoustic guitars are no longer good.

After a few days in which I played exclusively on the D-35, the D-28 for comparison purposes was brought out of the suitcase and the has quite its charm. The sound of my D-28 is naturally much weaker in the bass range, but the guitar sounds "more glowing" - difficult to describe.

I could not try the D-35 in the band, but I can imagine that in combination with a bass and several stringed instruments the richer sound of the D-35 brings no advantage and the D-28 gets better. The D-35 is easy to use when playing solo (eg vocal accompaniment) or when used in small formations without a bass.

The D-35 is slightly in the shadow of the D-28, but that does not have to be. The guitar rated here sounds great, is very good playable and you can not stop playing.

The usual price discussion with such instruments I do not open. I am assuming that the D-35 will age with me and will be constantly in use and then forget the moment when the credit card must be pushed into the card reader. With regard to current (year 2017) ongoing discussions around Hölzer and the CITES agreement, the guitar is also likely to be relatively unstable.
