Could have been good

FoxGolf, 22.05.2017
Here is my review of the Sire M7 5St TBL:

First to the externalities: The color of the instrument has very little to do with the illustration in the webshop. It is rather a half-transparent blue, which was not painted as a burst (with fogging to the center), but the middle area after the painting was apparently wiped off. At least let the build traces in the grain suggest this. The whole looks not very successful.
The overall appearance of the paintwork appears to be clean and pleasant thanks to the matt surface, but some dust inclusions can be found.

The design of the head plate I find in Natura not as disturbing as in pictures, but it does not fit to the shape of the carcass. The shape of the body I have found the shaping fit, only the lower cutaway is not cut deep enough to reach the 24th waist comfortably. The e-compartment cover makes a cheap impression and has no particularly accurate cut-out.

The bass is well-balanced on the harness and is tolerably heavy with 4.3kg, even if there are lighter copies of this model.

The neck has a comfortable C-shaped profile with steeper flanks towards the fingerboard. The dimensions are as follows: width at the saddle 45,2mm, at the 24th waist 74,4mm; Thickness on the 1st binding 21mm, on the 12th binding 22,9mm.

The collar looks clean. However, there is a clear drop of the vermouth in the setting: the string position is not particularly low and despite the correct neck curvature, the string riders of the bridge are screwed far up and the strings are still rattling slightly. I guess times a "jumping hill" in the throat as a cause and have only no attempts to improve the strings.

The edge between the neck PU and the handleboard end is also very unattractive, since the contour of the neck does not correspond to that of the body. The edge interferes with the flap, which is all the more embarrassing, since the name transmitter of the bass is one of the "loops".
The bridge looks solid and offers the possibility to pull the strings both conventionally, as well as through the body. There is even the possibility to set the stringspacing (default: 18mm). The work is by D'Addario.

To the sound:
The bass sounds unreinforced as expected from the wood combination with a light growling and good sustain. Amplified the whole thing just over, with the electronics offers a wide range of sounds. Especially the coil switching is a gain here, whereby I like a PJ-sound (neck-PU serial, bridge-PU single). Passive (goes by the way without battery) is missing some spasm, but what can be solved in the active mode. The control ranges of the EQ are exaggerated, since there would have been less, for more precise adjustability. The PU-Blendregeler is rather a three-way switch; Continuous overlapping is not possible. The output level is quite low, but this can be controlled by the gain control on the amp.

For a five-string bass with a 35 "feel, the H-string should not be an issue, but although it appears very massive in the attack, it weakens a little while sustaining the E-string.

Conclusion:
Actually, this bass could be a wonderfully versatile work tool with good playability and a wide range of sounds. But due to the mentioned deficiencies in the string position and the disturbing edge at the neck-body transition, the picture is considerably clouded. In this price class such a thing should no longer occur.

And again a game changer!

07.10.2016
I smiled when I played the first "real" Fender jazz, and I smiled when I played the Sire V7 and I knew I'll smile again when he is finally available to M7 and today it was time: Big Smile on the face! What Sire there again, everything is gone. Again a game changer! My precious bass (Ken Smith, Alembic etc ...) I already sold when buying the V7 but now it is clear the M7 wins even over the V7. Here are a few points compared to the V7.

- much lighter !!!
- Improved potentiometers
- Bridge very well done and each rider is fixable with the third allen !!!
- Pickups can be switched separately parallel, serially or individually, so you have J / J, P / J and P / P sound possibilities - I played it today in P / J and that makes for extra growls at the lower mids where The V7 is somewhat weaker (the slap sound is more like Marcus Miller). If both switches are pointing downwards, then there is another boost and this might be mobile for a solo, for example.
- Works well in the mix - without processing and even without EQ - but I find active is a must. Bass rule is usually very sensitive - my maximum position is maybe 2-3mm after the detention point - more low-ends I really do not need.
- Thumann's string and neck setting is OK but not optimal for me - had to lower the strings and adjust the intonation especially the B-side.
- apropos B side. Best Low B in Business now has this Bass - Sustain and Clarity extremely good - even when folded.
- 24 frets - no dead notes / frets
- Neck seems to me to be narrower and "slimmer" than Fender and V7.
- Transparent blue is beautifully made! I would buy again.
- Worksheets are chosen sensibly and match the sound.

The Youtube videos reflect the sound only conditionally - because often with mobile phone micro is recorded or the settings so adjusted that this no longer corresponds to the bass. In principle one can say that the sound is simply "even better" than the videos give. ;-)

One more point: Sire homepage says that the M7 is now always delivered with bag, but this was not the case thomann - I do not know whether thomann the bass effectively without bag or whether they sack the bag and sell it separately, however It would come from the dollar exchange rate that the bag would be included (without VAT). The bag I bought for the V7 (synonymous of Sire) is by the way outstanding, a bit unfortunate I have none received.
