Luna Solid Cedar and why Lanikai is better

Wolfgang B. 720, 08.10.2017
I buy my first ukulele after having been playing guitar for over 30 years. It should be installed a useful pickup system and so much my choice on this Luna. First of all, I notice the zero-padded gigbag, because it would have something better ago. After unpacking first positive: really sweet the Dingelchen! But the first performance brought the disillusionment: unplayable for me because the intonation is totally wrong! Leersaiten tuned, chord played: sounds totally oblique. A closer inspection of the saddle: he sits crooked on his neck! Short phone with Thoman, sent back and waiting for replacement. The second Luna Solid Cedar was also much better with the intonation, though not perfect. But unfortunately the strings were grotty high and some pronounced dead spots on the fingerboard. The sound is centered, very assertive but still very pleasing. The pickup system is active, but brings an extremely low level. Here we need a good preamp so that the noise remains in the frame. It sounds very good with brilliant heights. I have not kept them then but on recommendation of the Thomännern a Lanikai Mahogany Concert ukulele ordered: slightly wider neck, better sitarage, much better pickup system with tuner, padded gig bag ..

Tr s good first uke

Kay McRain, 26.07.2014
As the title indicates it is my first "serious" uke.

This is my first opinion. Usually I do not give but there is no opinion yet, I am the first so if it can help ...
I had a little fun a while ago on a first-rate soprano.
I am a guitarist / singer (for about twenty years) and I often do small scenes alone or with bassist. Especially the recovery in acoustic / electric + looper.
I wanted to transfer some songs on Ukulele for a long time. Then after I was not well informed I turned to this Uke for various reasons.
First of all I wanted at least the table to be massive and it is the case (moreover, aesthetically, the engravings are very pretty even if it remains subjective).
Then I wanted a form concert for more comfort left hand. This shape is actually very pleasant while remaining small (thus in the spirit "Ukulele"). I hesitated a lot with the form Tenor (a little less Uke for my taste). It is however not impossible that a next purchase leads me because it is really nice as an instrument.
Finally I wanted the Uke to be electro.

I have the Luna MO'O cedar for almost a month and I waited to post this review to have done the tour.
Coming from the guitar and being new in the universe of Ukulele I had to relearn the chords and lighten a little the right hand technique. It comes pretty quickly and it's very nice. In the end you can play everything on an Uke although some adaptations make it better than others

Why 4 stars?
Because I imagine that a massive whole must nevertheless frankly be of another level. Some uke cost very expensive and this is probably not for nothing.
But if the Ukulele is not our main instrument, we hold there I find a very good value for money. Of course, when it comes to my first Uke I can not compare ...

That being said, the first grip is very nice once we are accustomed to the lightness of the craft. Everything seems fragile and light but we have to do to good manufacture. The table in solid cedar engraved is irreproachable (although I prefer mahogany or koa for aesthetic reasons) and the rest in laminated mahogany is also very good invoice. No flaws to note on this side.
Very small flat in the nut of the head which is very very slightly offset the width of the handle (I chipote).
The abalone used is nacreous on the head but looks dull on the markings in moons on the handle (these are nevertheless an original touch of very good taste I think).
The edges of the frets are filed in bevel in impeccable ways: no hangs. Same for the handle in natural satin that is soft to the touch and does not hang at all. The same applies to the finish of the back and sides.
The sound in acoustics is very warm, soft, smooth (the Aquila strings are without doubt no strangers either). Only the sustain (especially in play on the fingers) is a little disappointing but I have no way of comparison.
The onboard electronics are of good quality, (the equalizer makes it possible to raise a little the basses and to adjust the acute accordingly). The female plug plugs in the jack plug and there is no play to note.
I play on bose L1 compact and, adding upstream a slight reverb + delay makes it possible to overcome the lack of sustain. The sound is then divine.
Afterwards, I know: we must compare only what is comparable but when I pass from my takamine P6-NC to the Ukulele we have to mount the sound. The preamp of the Luna is indeed much less powerful ... but very correct for what it is, it does not have to blush if you increase the volume to compensate.
I will finish on the soft and progressive mechanics that hold the tuning very well.

In conclusion :
Very good first Ukulele I am delighted with my purchase and I will recommend it to a friend without hesitation.
The cover provided on the other hand is not padded at all it is just the canvas.
It is better to remain vigilant during transport or change cover.

Thanks to Thomann for the (always) care taken with the packaging and (always) speed of delivery. I have (for now) never been disappointed by this site (including after-sales service).

Sorry to have been so ... talkative.
Good zic at all
