Spider V 30 W: very good

SylviaN, 11.10.2016
The new Spider V amp from Line 6 was expected with great excitement and ordered immediately when he was available at Thomann. Since the amp is only needed for the home and I do not need looper or cable transmission, I have decided to use the 30 watt version.

Appearance:
The Line 6 Spider V 30 W makes a very good overall impression and looks appealing.
The beveled control panel with the large and therefore easy to read display, in which all essential information is displayed, invites you to try the device.

Processing:
The closed housing is well processed, the stability is free of complaints, the amp has four plastic feet.
The cover of the loudspeaker cover feels great, looks wonderful and is very well processed. Also on the handle there is nothing to complain about.
Rotary knobs and pressure switches have a high-quality look, a noticeable pressure point or a torsion resistance and feel pleasant. The supplied power cable is surprisingly long.

Connections:
Front: Input and Phones
Rear: Power, AC In, USB (IOS or Android selectable with a select switch), FBV Pedal and Aux In

Sound:
The sound is very good and balanced. Some presets are for my ears a bit emphasized, but yes changeable. Superplus point: the amp can be played with master at about 9 clock in room volume.
The sun rises when (m) an acoustic guitar (Yamaha FGX 720) is played over the acoustic presets. The acoustic sounds are first cream, extraordinarily balanced, voluminous and harmonious. The Acoustic and Reso sounds of my Variax 500 also sound great.

Presets:
The 128 preset banks are divided as follows:
4 x Basics (01A to 01D)
16 x amps (02A to 05D)
12 x Effects (06A to 08D)
24 x genre 4 x each Rock, Metal, Indie, Blues, Country and Jazz (09A to 14D)
44 x Iconic Tones (15 A to 25 D), including Teen Spirit, Everlong, Barracuda, Little Wing, Puppet Master, The Trooper, Sweet Home, Just Got Paid, Chop Suey !, Wish You were here uvm.
24 x Artist Presets (26 A to 31 D)
4 x user presets, free and empty memory banks (32 A to 32 D)

User friendliness:
A clear and self-explanatory arrangement and function of the operating elements is to be established. These allow quick and easy access to all functions, via the home button you leave the current setting uncomplicated. The operating instructions do not have to be read before commissioning, much is intuitively, conclusively and sensibly. When changes have been made to a preset, a kind of rhombic symbol appears next to the preset name.
The original settings of the amps (gain, bass, treble, mid and volume) are marked with a dot in the display, so that the original sound can easily be adjusted again after the change (unsaved).
If you have tried all the presets and arrived at number 128, you can not simply go back to Preset 1. Instead, it is necessary to use the knob to reverse all the presets to return to Presset 1. This is cumbersome and impractical.
The renaming of the benches is somewhat friemelig, since one has to maneuver through the letters with the rotary control. (1 empty place, large bay, small letters, numbers, special characters)
The Spider has 78 amplifier models, which can be combined with 23 box models and open up an incredible number of options and combinations for sound tweets and individualists.
If you have found the right combination, you can upgrade the effect models with 101.
It is possible to use the effects (Comp, FX 1 to 3 and Reverb) via the corresponding FX knobs (without having to go into the menu). The effects already assigned to the respective preset are color-coded: yellow = distortion or compressor, blue = modulation, green = delay, and purple = pitch and syntact.
The Amp switch allows you to enter the menu of the existing amps and the combos, with the FX switch in the differentiated individual selection, modification and setting of all effect models.

Drumloops:
Coming with numberers therefore, and sounding all realistic and very good. Volume and tempo can be changed.

Tuner:
Great praise for those. It is very accurate and visually first class. No three pebbles .... but a graphical display in the display.

Spider Remote App:
The app requires unscrupulous access to the download. That a cable-supported app for the operation of an amplifier, eg access to my telephone book and my connection info would like to have, is not ok. I then downloaded them for testing. The user interface is clear and very well designed. The app demonstrates and simplifies access to all settings and the modification of existing presets and / or the creation of own sound variations.

Updates:
From the Line 6 homepage, the free downloadable Firrmware version 1.01.1 can be installed because it improves the interplay of the remote app with the amp, incorporates revised artist presets and improves the foot switch usage.

Pilot's manual:
Alber name for a manual. I do not want to fly, but to make music ...
It includes all the basic functions and information.
Unfortunately, this does not specify how a factory reset can be performed.

Summary:
The new Spider V is from my point of view all around successful.
The price-performance ratio makes it a recommended device in its class.
It will most likely be purchased for use in the domestic four walls.
For this purpose the Spider V 30 W is ideal and therefore from my point of view a clear and clear purchase recommendation.
