Lehle Little Dual

Switcher

  • For two amps with high impedance LTHZ transformers
  • The Little Dual switches the input signal via gold-plated switches to the outputs A or B
  • Outputs A and B can be operated at the same time on two different amps, since A of B is galvanically isolated by the high-end transformer Lehle LTHZ - ground loops are thereby excluded
  • The two inputs can be stereo-routed to outputs A and B.
  • In addition, the Little Dual has a gold-plated phase reversal and a ground switch

Lehle Little Dual; almost a great stomp box.

Cirrus, 28.01.2014
I want this pedal to be great. The truth is, it has so much going for it - stereo ins and outs, ground lift and polarity inversion to deal with the inevitable issues that arise from connecting two guitar amps together, a very solid case that screams "stamp on me!" and the obvious thought that's gone into its design right down to the high quality isolating transformer which is a must for any good ABY box.

So why is it good, and not great? There are three niggling annoyances that bugged me enough to sell this pedal on.

Firstly, the footswitches. While they are solid with good action and feel like they'll be very reliable in the long term, they have one annoying feature. The first time you click the footswitch, it operates on the downstroke as you'd expect. The next time you click it, it operates on the upstroke - so it doesn't switch outputs until you LIFT your foot off the switch. This might not be an issue for some but it bugged me because it makes it much harder to change sounds exactly on the beat - you need to think ahead and already have your foot pressed on the switch so you can lift it at exactly the right point, and I found that an irritation while performing on stage.

The second annoyance is that when in "Y" mode, both LEDs are lit. So unless you were paying attention, you might forget which amp is going to be left on when you come out of Y mode again. In a home or studio environment that wouldn't matter. But on stage in the heat of battle you've got a lot on your mind - jumping round the stage, not dropping your plectrum, trying to tell your drummer he's playing way too fast... you might forget. And at the end of your big stereo solo you press the Y switch and have no idea which amp is going to cut out. It's scary. I think the pedal should have three LEDS - A, B and Y. So that even in Y mode, you know which amp is nominally selected.

The final annoyance is the shape of the bottom. It has little feet that are moulded from the underside so it's very difficult to velcro to a pedalboard without using a mounting adapter. It would be so much easier if it was just flat.

So those are the negatives. What are the positives? Well, it has many. The aforementioned features make it a powerful and flexible unit. The build quality is rugged, and you can really feel the German engineering that went into its construction. The sound quality is totally transparent. If Lehle made an updated version of this box that addressed my three concerns, it would blow all the competition straight out of the water.

Solid

I got this some months ago after I did my first tries in playing through two amps simultaneously (using the stereo outputs of a Boss Delay DD-7). Setup: Guitar into Pedal board (volume pedal, tuner, noise gate, distortion, fuzz, delay, hall pedals - managed through a palmer eight way looper). Input A goes into a Hiwatt custom 100, input B into a Boss RC-30 which goes into a peavey 6505+. I am able to record a loop in channel B and play to it using the other amp on channel A.
Another possibilty would be to have a stereo setup, placing stereo delay or hall stuff after the Lehle.
There's a grounding switch which may help in eliminating hum in some constellations I believe, but I didn't notice a audible difference in my setup.
However, my main application is biamping, and this works flawlessly. The phase inverter switch is pretty nice, it allows to eliminate phase cancellation to a certain grade. The difference was clearly audible in my setup. The only thing I didn't like that much about the pedal was the switching behavior (read contras for details).

Pros:
+ No need of power supply for base functionality (only for the LEDs)
+ The LEDs are bright enough but not too bright (I also have an MXR Pedal that shines so bright that i'm unable to see the pedals next to it on dark stages...)
+ Phase inverter switch
+ Very well built housing, seems pretty robust

Contra:
- Price
- Strange behavior of the switches: If A is active and you step on switch B, channels are changed on downpressing. If B is active and you step on switch B, channels are changed on RELEASE. Same behavior with switch A, once it changes when pressed down, once on release. I have no idea if this is by design or a bug of my device, but I got used to it more or less, but it was very confusing at the beginning.

Overall, I really like it and would recommend it to anyone who wants to do biamping stuff!
