Solid state magic
Tom FFTB, 08.06.2018
Bought this head as a back-up to my Orange Dual Terror, but of course had to take it for a test spin last band rehearsal. We play something between hardcore and metalcore, and for the record: I hate using pedals of any sort. That's why this Kustom caught my eye! It has some basic reverb, delay and chorus built in, and with a dual footswitch, you can activate the hidden boost function. All that for a ridiculous amount of money. How did it do?

Well, surprisingly well!

With a quality guitar/pickup (I use a Gibson Les Paul studio with Burstbuckers) and quality speaker cab (I use a Randall Warhead 412 cab with Celestion V30 speakers), it WILL give you a very decent sound! Especially for the money!
The clean channel is indeed quite loud and lush, as others have described. However, I usually only use the lead channel on any amp, and roll down the volume on my guitar. That works like a charm! It responds so well to the volume of my guitar, in a way no other solid state amp has in the past. And I have tried a lot of them! Whoever said that the gain sounds like a Boss Metal Zone, or worse, is clearly not doing something right. With high output pickups, I set the gain to 9 o'clock, the volume to max, and control the gain with my volume knob. Great sounds all around! Unbelievable! Outperforms the Orange CR120 I used to own on that front! Is it the same 'three dimensional' sound my Dual Terror produces? Of course not, it is still solid state, but is it a bad sound? Not in the least!

- Volume could be higher for 100 watts. The before mentioned Orange CR120 is rated at only 20 watts more, but is considerably louder. So is the Boss Katana 100 head. It is just enough to cut through, but then again, our band is very loud (due to the massive size of the rehearsal room and the loudness of the drummer), and I have found many 15 watt tube amps coming up shorter than the Kustom KG100hfx. I would compare it to a 20-30 watt tube amp. The EQ is nice, though, and allows the guitar to sit nicely in the mix. It cuts through fine! Unlike many Randall amps I used to own.

- There is only one speaker output. Would have loved to have had an extra output. We tried the two inputs on the Kustom with our two guitars at the same time, and if you could split this sound over two cabinets, the balance in sound would be impressive.

- The effects don't have a wide range of tweakeability. They do add a pleasant ambiance to the sound, but nothing near what a good pedal could do. Like I said, I'm not a pedal guy, so this doesn't bother me. I drink my whiskey straight up too, no ice for me.

All in all, for this kind of money, I would recommend you try this amp. It will probably not be for everyone, but if you know how to dial in an amp and have some decent gear at either end of it, you will be rewarded with sounds far beyond the asking price. I love the simple plug and play spirit of the amp over the Boss Katana 100 I had before, and I love the responsiveness to volume on the guitar over the Orange CR120 I used to have. Not bad references, right?

Where do I start! So I was looking for a cheap amp head to use at church and to practice with. looking through stuff and came a cross this, Couldn't believe the price. "This cheap" Next thought was " Is it good"? Luckily for me I saw a video, where a guy was using this amp, and man that sounded so GOOD! So I went ahead and bought one!

I am truly surprised of this amp! Its sounds Awesome, :O

Clean channel is super clean and snappy and so responsive and adds lot a dynamics to your playing, and turns you in to John Mayer :P I have "Mids" cracked all the way, Coz I like how that tone. I Just love it, its sound great and beautiful. Dirty channel give you the classic rock sound and sounds AWESOME with humbuckers!

Biggest pros : The PRICE! (when I bought this it was 1119 DKK, but now it's 800 DKK! Unbelievable) and it's loud. has good features!

Cons: Don't have one yet!

So if you are looking for cheap awesome Amp head, you will not regret this :)
Finally Kustom amps deserves lot of credit and Thanks Thomann ;)
