Very Good Amp, let down by its FX Loop

Chris744, 11.06.2013
I purchased this amp because I read reviews that suggested that this amp has a tone akin to a Marshall on 'steroids'. To some extent this summary can be considered true.

On unboxing you will notice that this is nicely put together; for its price the build quality is exceptional. I received an immaculately put together amp. A glance across the front panel tells you that you have everything you need. 2 channels with independent gain and volumes and a shared EQ. You immediately notice however, that there is no switch on the front to change the channel. The channel can only be changed by the footswitch. Although this seems ridiculous, it is a 50w powerhouse which I wouldn't recommend for home use, so chances are you are gigging in which case the footswitch would be connected. And the cable length on the footswitch is very long!

Sound wise I find this amp good. Tone is subjective and I find that this amp has far too much gain on tap. I have the overdrive channel gain on 3 and i still find it too high, but lowering it doesnt give enough chunk to the sound, so I keep it on 3. My first impression of the sound was horrible however; the amp was ridiculously fizzy. The only way I found to rectify this was to simply have the treble on 0. I found this odd but then read that a lot of Marshall players play with no treble, so in a way it makes sense. After finding my sweet spot with the controls I find this amp very touch responsive, and with the overdrive volume on about 5 it really sings with nice power valve saturation. I can find the gain fizzy at times, but this is easily lost in the mix of a band, so it isnt an issue. As for the clean channel, much like a marshall again, this is passable. I prefer to roll off on my guitars volume rather than use a clean channel. Past 9 o' clock on the clean channel (called normal channel) will get you in to AC/DC territory. Not what im after in a clean channel.

Finally I bring you on to the FX loop, the feature that spoils this amp for me. This may not be a problem for many, but if you wish to run effects in the loop then beware. The Jet Citys, much like the Soldanos are notorious for not taking effects well. I simply didnt find a pedal that works. The FX loop sends out a +4db signal that most pedals cant handle, and expects one in return, ruling out a lot of foot pedals. The TC Electronic stuff works however. This amp was designed for use with rack gear, which if you're like me and only want a bit of delay is a bit of an expense.

This issue aside however, this is a good amp - it packs a punch at a price the wallet can handle and gives you a very gainy rock tone. Im not sure why they bothered with a normal channel, but all in all its a decent amp. You wont find better for the price.

Great budget tube amp, though not without a few problems

30.04.2015
A great budget 50W tube amp from Jet City, I pair this with the matching 212 and it's plenty loud enough for any gigging situation, can be turned low enough for bedroom practice though you might find it slightly overkill for this purpose...

Handling: Quite weighty for it's size, though light enough to carry with one hand, the handle at the top seems very strong and well made.

Features: Quite a simple amp head, two channels (crunch and overdrive) which can only be switched from the included footswitch. two master volume controls and two gain controls (one for each channel) shared 3 band EQ (bass mids treble) and a prescence control. Round the back of the amp is a line level effects loop (which limits what pedals you can run through it) and a 8ohm & 16ohm speaker outs.

Sound: The crunch channel is aptly named, with the only way of keeping this amp squeaky clean is to have the pre-amp gain less than a third of the way up, beyond this the amp starts producing a nice crunch and when maxed produces a classic rock style crunch tone.
The overdrive channel is where this amp shines, a beautiful overdriven tone suitable for rhythm or lead playing with the more than enough gain on top with the only issue being that the amp just sounds fizzy if you max the gain.

Quality: Although well made I have had some problems with screeching feedback with the amp at volume, fortunately after a visit to a tech to get the tubes biased and adjustment made to the gain stages (and the use of a noise gate) I've managed to get this under control and this may have just been a one off.

If you are looking for a budget tube amp capable of a great crunch and overdriven tone and don't mind not having a squeaky clean tone at high volumes then this is definetely worth looking at.
