For better, or for worse....!
Jerryalto, 21.02.2018
After over forty years playing as a professional woodwind instrumentalist I have to confess that one is never too old to benefit from new(ish) ideas. After recently listening to a recording of an orchestral concert I took part in a couple of months ago, as guest soloist (alto and tenor saxes - light-music/pop programme), I was amazed to find that my tone was not that which I hear in my head whilst playing. This concert was without amplification so there were no monitors to listen to and, to my horror, the alto sounded rather harsh whilst the tenor was full and round! This is exactly the opposite of my expectations and, as I'm originally a classical alto player who doesn't enjoy playing tenor, a total shock.
It just so happened that on the same day I was sent a YouTube clip of a review of the Jazzlab Deflector by a player/teacher I greatly respect. He stated after using one for several months he couldn't play a gig without it. I immediately ordered one.
Now after a few day of playing with it I can hear why. Suddenly, whatever the acoustics of where you are playing, you get the real sound you produce reflected back for your ears to hear..... be it good or bad. I was lost for words...... what a difference to what I had believed my sound was, not bad but 'different'. Now I can adjust as I play and not be shocked when hearing a recording! Just as useful is using the Deflector when playing in ensembles, you can now hear what you are playing even when, as in a recent orchestral concert, the four French Horns were positioned directly in front of me.
Whatever your level of playing this item is a must to help your tone and intonation. A great piece of kit.

Must-Have in any saxophone case

This deflector sits on my main horn by default. It gives you the right kind of feedback you need when playing. Bargain imho, AND: no wires or anything :-)
