the top of the analog delay shop

AlexandreM, 16.06.2014
In the family of analog delays, Jam Llama climbs on the podium without any difficulty.
Whether it's better than Electro Harmonix's Deluxe Memory Man or Way Huge's Supa Puss (or Echo Puss) makes no sense. Because all elements of the audio system are taken into account. Especially the amp.
The Memory Man is more limpid. He makes the law in the field of clear sound to the U2. He goes wonderfully on a Vox, just like a Mesa Boogie (Andy Timmons) or a Fender. But he is doing very well in hi-gain too (the sound Steve Morse).
The Way Huge are perfect with a hi-gain shredder amp, especially in the parallel loop of a Rectifier 2 channels (the 3 channels have a loop in series less suitable for delays and reverbs). Supa Puss and Echo Puss manage admirably clean and crunch (Waren Haynes).
The Jam stands out from the crowd if it's used with Marshall JCM800 mid-gain amps and other old-fashioned Hiwatt, Orange, or Bogner, Friedman or Matchless boutique amps. This delay is primarily a big piece of Pink Floyd sound with a specificity: the thickness. It's hot, huge and lo-fi on the rehearsals that can end up sounding like organ pads.
The Llama works very well in its clear, it's just a matter of taste. This is the sound of "The Wall", period. Lovers of the TC 2290, go your way. The Jam is a big cheese that was left to macerate for a taste of taste on arrival. This pedal has a sound signature, a very strong identity, and will necessarily color the sound: we like it or not. But this little game there, it is simply unbeatable.
I have pretty much everything lagging on the market, and I have not found anything better. Whatever the settings, it sounds. As much the Memory Man has competition (it's a star at the same time) with the Electroman, Ekko 616 or Panther Cub, excellent but which in my eyes remain copies, as the Jam is alone on his ground . Certainly thanks to its chips in New Old Stock that no longer run the streets.
He impressed me so much that I have the standard version and the version with the second switch. The latter makes it possible to maintain the repetitions as long as it is not released. Even more psychedelic. And this version accepts an expression pedal.
Guitarists who love material that has character and play in a classic rock, pop 60's, British blues or hard rock will not spit on this Llama (arf arf arf). But I advise everyone to try it. It does not come out unscathed. It's healing you from modeling. This jewel is built for purists and puts your ears on the right path of authenticity.
And if you do not like the look, Jam offers all kinds of finishes in his workshop in Greece. We speak here of very high-end boutique pedals.

Of course, with this kind of gear we are at the antipodes of versatility. Typical effect, the Llama is not perfect.
First of all it only produces a delay of 600ms maximum fault to the NOS chips which are replicas of the Panasonic MN3205. 600ms, like the Echo Puss. It's better than the Deluxe Memory Man at 550ms. But not as good as a Supa Puss at 900ms or a Panther Cub and its 1000ms.
Side purely practical, it does not have a system of attachment to a pedal. But at least it runs on 9VDC. However, it must be ensured that the intensity of the current is greater than 200mA to be quiet. It's always better than the Memory Man and his damn 24VDC.
The Llama actually suffers from a single flaw. If it does not produce a breath, it generates on the other hand a fall of the level of the signal. There, the Way Huge put him the pattée. It will be necessary to insert it by means of a line-mixer able to boost the signal of 10 to 20db. Either custom at Newman FX or Skrydstrup, or in a loop with settings of that level. With series effects amps, I use a Lelhle Parralel M and an Ernie Ball volume pedal to solve this problem. The Ernie Ball then acting as pedal of expression. Just adjust the levels with the Lehle and you're done. This trick is useless with a Bogner Ecstasy or a Mesa Boogie Rectifier 2 channels since these two amps are equipped with parallel loops with Wet / Dry mix and send level. And they deserve, a delay at the top.

PS The MXR Carbon Copy, Lovepedal Echophonic and other pedals at 150 euros are out of the race, the Llama boxing in the heavyweight category. I made comparisons out of curiosity, it's like tasting canned rillettes after a foie gras. As for digital delays, it's day and night. An Empress or Eventide are very good, but they are not there to produce authentic lo-fi sound. They do not do the same job.

Perfect for lovers of anal or "vintage"

RaulP, 08.07.2012
- Finish: The finish and resistance of the pedal is simply "perfect", other brands do not use materials that in my opinion have to be resistant considering that live can be given another stomp stronger than it should.

- Sound: It is a perfect pedal for lovers of natural, analog or vintage sound, and the settings that can be achieved are quite varied, have level controls, repetitions and delay (little else can be added in a delay) .

- My Opinion, personal use: I use it for clean sounds and for solo ones, and I am very satisfied with the result obtained. The sound difference is not noticeable at all when it is in the bypass position, there is no attenuation of the guitar signal.
