Chuffed with the beast!

The Loun, 15.01.2018
At first I was hesitant about buying an Ibanez amp head since I wasn't aware that they had much experience in that department, but the solo guitarist in our band convinced me to take a look, so I pulled the trigger on it after mulling over the competition.

I'm very pleased I did, no regrets whatsoever. I can get just about any sound I want out of it except searing metal (which isn't my scene anyway) and I was already aware that this amp had more of a vintage flavour, which is what I wanted. It feels solid, sturdy and well put together. It's easy to operate with large dials, however the onboard tubescreamer switch and boost switch are small and fiddly and you will surely want the footswitch, which, alas, comes seperately.

Word of caution for those who think it matters, there is no middle control. In reality, I find that it doesn't make much difference. I just cut the bass and treble and turn it up. Some might say that's not the same, but my tone is as fat as I could want it. I play 70's Thin Lizzy style rock with a P90 loaded Fender Mustang (I know, weird choice).

I love the sound. The cleans shimmer, the bass is tight enough and the mids will come through, as I say, with a cut to the other frequencies. I don't use the 5w setting since it doesn't sound as good as the full 15W in my opinion, but it's no skin off my nose. The output options are excellent. The effects loop works well. The tubescreamer is rich and never gets thin or fizzy. This amp is also very bright I find, in a nice way (especially for SRV type stuff), however that can be tamed with some attention if required.

It doesn't break up much at all, even at full volume. You need the onboard tubescreamer for dirt. I see that as a plus for what I do since I also play funk with my Strat and like it loud, your milage may vary.

I've been using a closed back Jet City cab my friend gave me and it sounds very good already. I can't wait until my Egnater cab arrives! Word is that this amp isn't as loud as "some other" 15w amps. I don't know anything about that but for band rehearsals it can knock your socks off (I stick a Digitech RP500 through it). I haven't yet gigged with it but will be doing so soon and I have no qualms about that, at least in a smaller venue. For bigger venues we're miked up anyway.

I even forgot (twice!) to plug in the speaker cable and left it on for a minute or two before realising what an idiot I was. No sweat, no harm done at all.

If you play a pointy axe on one string tuned to drop whatever and need 23 stages of gain to play your stuff then I'd say get another amp. For almost everything else, this will work well, from cleans to 80's rock. Maybe for blues purists who want that natural tube overdrive this may not be their bag neither, but I find with the tubescreamer on minimum you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. All in all, a great amp at this price point.

WOW, what an amp for the money!!

05.09.2014
Well I read a lot of great reviews about this product and they're certainly true, I don't think you will find a tube amp of the same quality at a similar price! Firstly, the build quality is far better than expected, nice chrome hardware and very neat tolex work. Everything seems well built and solid, especially when you consider the price. There are however a few issues I've found, the 1/4 inch input, effect loop and speaker sockets all feel a little clunky and cheap, and even though they function fine it's still not a pleasant experience to plug anything into it, maybe some contact lubricant would help.

Onto the main thing, sound. This thing really is astonishing for the price, I'm using it through a Celestion G12m-65 speaker and the tone is phenomenal. My dad owns a fender deluxe reverb, which is a tone this amp gets really close to when playing clean, incredible really considering the £800 price difference. The tubes supplied are of good quality too, which is unusual for china. My only little gripe about features is the lack of a built in reverb, which would really add life to the amp, though I guess this is how they kept costs low. I think they accommodated for this with the effects loop which makes adding a reverb in really easy, without distorting it when using the built in tube screamer. The tube screamer built in really does sound like my pedal, its a neat feature I'll use a lot, though it would be more convenient to activate it via a foot switch, but hey ho, you have to buy that separately, though it's so simple you could always make your own if you wanted. Th boost seems like a nice feature too, if you're playing live and want to break into a solo, again the foot switch would be very useful for this.

In conclusion, this amp really blows me away, for the money, you will really struggle to get better, with a great speaker/s paired with it, I cannot recommend it enough!
