A surprisingly versatile bass

KevinO, 28.12.2018
This is a very well made bass, quite sturdy for a hollow body, and full of quirky design points.

The Guild bi-sonic pickups have a strong and characterful output, and given their placement, cover very different sounds. The pole pieces are individually adjustable, making string-to-string balance easy to achieve. The neck pickup is very warm but still able to have some top end bite. The bridge pickup is very cutting without sounding thin, and is able to be very prominent in the mix when required. The 3-way pickup toggle switch combined with volume & tone controls for each pickup makes a huge combination of sounds available. Having a master volume to control all this is a useful touch.

The bridge is in keeping with the 60?s origin of the bass, down to the rosewood saddles?it all works surprisingly well, as well as looking very cool.

Everything about this bass feels just right - it is clear that there is some heritage behind it all. The bass is good for most styles, though probably not really for metal or slapping. It came supplied with roundwound strings - they sounded OK, but to really bring out the character of the bass, I swapped these out for Pyramid Gold flatwounds. One thing to note is that although this is a short-scale bass, medium scale strings will be needed, due to the afterlength required behind the saddles.

In the flesh, this Guild is a truly gorgeous bass to look at & to play. Being a hollowbody, the headstock dive is present but less noticeable than on some solid bodied basses.
I have several basses, but this Guild gets played out on a regular basis, and is always fun - a definite keeper.

From the F? Nbass to the favorite bass?

MCmint, 11.04.2016
Semi-acoustic guitars and basses have made it visually for a long time. For guitars, this type of bass is the exception to the rule.

In the search for an extension of the sound palette, I am now inevitably arrived at a half-acoustic bass. On a visit to a Sophie Hunger concert, it has also been confirmed that you can play a whole concert with such a bass and with an extremely dense, woody low bass bass, in this case a Höfner club bass from German production.

How much you want to spend on a fifth bass must of course decide for yourself. For a bass from China, I could not really warm up.

After I have worked with a few German models, which are priced over 2.000 ¤, I am more by chance at the Guild Starbass II landed, which I had not on the screen at all. It is also interesting that you get different search results, depending on how you prepare yourself in the online catalog.

Visually, this model immediately appealed to me. A two-part report on the vintage original from 1967 in BQ has finally made me curious. A few English-speaking reviews the need aroused the bass itself.

And what can I say, the bass keeps what he promises optically. Beautiful woody tone, by the two pickups but versatile from dub bass at the Halston pickup to snappy-mid-concreting-strong at the bridge and with both Humbucker a nice allround sound for Pop, Soul and all art-progression. But he and I do not want to use this instrument alone.

Great also the mastervolume poti.

Distortion, compression, chorus, wah he can tolerate well. Octaver better only with the Stegtonabnehmer. Hall and delay are not its favorite effects.

The processing "handcrafted in Korea" is perfect. Painting without blemish, neck is wonderful in the hand, top strings at delivery. Only the octave purity of the G-string had to be adjusted, which happened with the practical bridge in turn.

Plays almost like a guitar, short scale was not a big changeover, I hope that I then still want to play long scale bass.

Now I just wanted to try flatwound strings. This also fits perfectly, it gets softer and warmer, but the bit of guitars is something lost. The best thing would be both handy. If you would like to have a flatbed, please note that due to construction reasons medium scale flats are required: Daddario ECB81M fit perfectly.

At the moment, the instrument recorded as a fifth bass is at the top of the "I want to play you" list!

Otherwise, I am fully satisfied with the Thomann service, with which a small damage to the case could be quickly and uncomplicated regulated.
