From the F? Nbass to the favorite bass?

MCmint, 11.04.2016
Semi-acoustic guitars and basses have made it visually for a long time. For guitars, this type of bass is the exception to the rule.

In the search for an extension of the sound palette, I am now inevitably arrived at a half-acoustic bass. On a visit to a Sophie Hunger concert, it has also been confirmed that you can play a whole concert with such a bass and with an extremely dense, woody low bass bass, in this case a Höfner club bass from German production.

How much you want to spend on a fifth bass must of course decide for yourself. For a bass from China, I could not really warm up.

After I have worked with a few German models, which are priced over 2.000 ¤, I am more by chance at the Guild Starbass II landed, which I had not on the screen at all. It is also interesting that you get different search results, depending on how you prepare yourself in the online catalog.

Visually, this model immediately appealed to me. A two-part report on the vintage original from 1967 in BQ has finally made me curious. A few English-speaking reviews the need aroused the bass itself.

And what can I say, the bass keeps what he promises optically. Beautiful woody tone, by the two pickups but versatile from dub bass at the Halston pickup to snappy-mid-concreting-strong at the bridge and with both Humbucker a nice allround sound for Pop, Soul and all art-progression. But he and I do not want to use this instrument alone.

Great also the mastervolume poti.

Distortion, compression, chorus, wah he can tolerate well. Octaver better only with the Stegtonabnehmer. Hall and delay are not its favorite effects.

The processing "handcrafted in Korea" is perfect. Painting without blemish, neck is wonderful in the hand, top strings at delivery. Only the octave purity of the G-string had to be adjusted, which happened with the practical bridge in turn.

Plays almost like a guitar, short scale was not a big changeover, I hope that I then still want to play long scale bass.

Now I just wanted to try flatwound strings. This also fits perfectly, it gets softer and warmer, but the bit of guitars is something lost. The best thing would be both handy. If you would like to have a flatbed, please note that due to construction reasons medium scale flats are required: Daddario ECB81M fit perfectly.

At the moment, the instrument recorded as a fifth bass is at the top of the "I want to play you" list!

Otherwise, I am fully satisfied with the Thomann service, with which a small damage to the case could be quickly and uncomplicated regulated.

Finally a low half-case

Bernard6137, 25.10.2016
I hesitated a lot to know which model of half-case I was going to choose.
Between Guild, Fender, Gretsch or Hagström the choice in this price range is not lacking.
I took the Guild for the good reviews it has and for the style of music I play, from the late 60's Rock's early 70's and I'm a big fan of the Airplane.

Used already for a concert, it delighted everyone by its loock and its sound.
And me by its featherweight.
The Guild is very beautiful. The wood is beautiful and the chrome well shiny.
The grip is very easy, its handle thin medium / short scale is a treat.
The sound is easily adjustable with both microphones and knobs.
The general volume potentiometer allows to have a sound either clean bass limit or Rock well when pushing (I play on a Bassman of 66).
The absence of thumb rest does not interfere with finger play. The forearm naturally finds its place on the edge of the box.

Unlike the French review on Thomann, I do not find the microphones too weak: no need to lower them to decrease the attack (I will even go up a bit the pads of the two treble I do not find well regulated) but My other bass, a Vantage VP710 B for those who know, has a crazy attack!

Two negative points though:
- the absence of a protection plate around the jack input (be careful to aim properly),
- the rosewood bridges that look very fragile. Besides, my ground rope is too low due to the not very well placed notch and is almost on the edge of the handle and sometimes "slip". We see on the site of Guild that the bridges are sold without the notch so the adjustment was badly done in factory for this rope. I think at first to make a second notch in V a little higher on the trigger guard, we will see later.

Apart from these two points, I am fully satisfied and not far from putting a 5 star everywhere!
