A really sensible alternative to the GK3

Christian940, 21.09.2015
I bought the Hexpander Kit because I was not satisfied with the solution GK-3 -> Guitar Synthesis. It is neither the quality nor the latency of the GK-3. It is a solid solution, but for me the wrong. The GK-3 on my Tune-o-matic-equipped guitars affected the playing mechanics considerably. Furthermore, the whole thing was bulky and the guitar was not played most of the time. Now it's different. Together with the Resomax Piezo Bridge, I have the solution I was looking for: no plug-in thing, no changing game feel to the "magnetic operation", decent palm mute sound in the COSM operation of the GR-55.

The processing is good and the enclosed instructions is sufficient, if also at the one or other place misleading. Also the template for the cutout of the new jackplate with the 13-pin connector is incorrectly dimensioned and thus unfortunately unusable. This gives prints in operation and processing. The missing Mag-to-7-pin cable gives prints with the features, as the GK-3 had. For explanation: this cable allows the connection of the normal pickup circuit with the circuit of the hexpander. What does it matter, now ask some.

The answer: It allows the signal from the magnetic pickups to pass over the 13-pin cable and then tap the guitar-out of the synth to feed it to the amp. This allows you to play on the guitar _nur_ with the 13-pin cable and can access both operations. Btw, only then does the included mini-switch get its meaning. It switches between "normal PUs", "normal PUs + hexpander" and "hexpander only". Actually cool, but what does it do if you have no connection of the hexpander and the normal PUs out of the box. The problem is, especially because the cable here at Thomann can not be ordered.

Otherwise:
- you have to bring a lot of time and a little craftsmanship with proper tool (Forstnerbohrer, Dremel, vice, screw clamps, chisels, ...).
- you need vieeeeeel place in the e-compartment (about 10 x 5 cm), in order to accommodate everything (many cables, the circuit board, the jackplate and socket).

And now the MOST IMPORTANT (applies only to the Tune-o-Matic-Use Case):

!!! The guitar needs ne ground line from the tailpiece, to solder it at the hexpander volume potentiometer !!!

Otherwise, growls. Who has a mass line from the brigade, should be in trouble here, since the piezoelectric elements are plastic brackets.

All in all it was a worthwhile, if also expensive investment.

Exclusive use in guitar synth

Christian P. 654, 18.09.2014
I use a Roland VG-99 for a few years and I replaced the unsightly Roland sensors by piezo bridges on all my guitars.

I am a professional designer and I build my guitars with great care for the needs of my gaming ergonomics; No switches, no adjustment buttons, maximum simplicity equal weight and saved heads.

After purchasing several of these "Hexpander Preamp", I would have liked that Graphtech develops a piezo data processing product that is nomadic, usable on several guitars, and then free heavy hard and fragile 13-pin cable with a system without Wire would be very current ...

Apart from these demanding user expectations, Graph Tech performs well; it's clean.
However, care must be taken not to damage the components at the installation. In the end, the whole system shines by its discretion and everything works perfectly on my four equipped guitars.

I will not talk about latency, I am not a sprinter on the sleeve, I am perfectly satisfied with the performance offered by the system. You have to know how to adapt your game to the sounds used in midday ...

I strongly hope that the technical evolutions mentioned above are part of the plans at Graph Tech ...
