I have finally grown to love this bass!

Gregg Hermetech, 10.07.2017
I bought this bass about three years ago. I wanted a relatively inexpensive Fender Jazz style bass to replace my old MIJ Jazz, which I left in Japan.

I read lost of reviews and liked the look of it in photos and on spec, so ordered one. At first when it arrived, I wasn't too pleased with the appearance of the wood through the lacquer. It looked very pedestrian and unexciting, like a plank of plain wood basically, no flashy grain patterns etc., but over the years I have started to like it more, especially as the wood has started to darken.

Fit and finishings were generally very good. I like the machine heads a lot. I usually upgrade machine heads on all my guitars and basses, but haven't felt the need to here. The only little niggle was a very slight gap between the neck and body joint on the lower edge, but less than a mm, and apparently not that unusual with cheaper CNC machined bodies and necks from Asia. It doesn't appear to affect the feel or tone of the bass at all.

The neck was straight, fretwork was good, setup was OK, (but I do all my own setups on all my guitars and basses every 6 months anyway, so that's never a concern for me).

For a couple of years I was only playing it through a DI into my studio monitors, and was pretty unimpressed with the tone, sound, pickups etc., but then last year I finally got to try it through a nice tube amp (a heavily modded Deluxe Reverb hand built for me to my spec) and it was only then I realised just what a quality tone this thing is capable of. I had been considering letting it go until that point. So, the pickups are great, the tone is great etc., but you might not hear all that if you are only using a DI with mismatched impedance etc.

I've played a fair few Fender Jazz basses over the years, and realise that with Music Man and G&L, Leo Fender continued to keep evolving his design. The main places this can be seen on this bass are in the six screws attaching the neck to the body (as opposed to four on a Jazz), presumably leading to a better/stronger connection between the two (with possibly better tone?), and also in the design of the bridge, which is just fantastic, smooth, no jaggy edges, easy to adjust and has a locking screw to lock down the saddles/intonation once you have got it perfect, and stop them from moving from side to side.

I'd say with a good setup, this bass is insanely good value for money. It feels, sounds, and plays great. I sometimes wish it looked a bit more sexy, but that's about it. Highly recommended!

What a cracking Bass - a Jazz with P thump!

David7029, 19.02.2015
I bought this as a backup Bass for my normal Fender Precision and am knocked out by it to the extent that it is now used first in a gig rather than the other way round.

The build quality and finish is superb, easily the match for a USA made bass and the hardware which can let down a far eastern guitar is spec'd and manufactured in the US anyway. The body is swamp ash so not the lightest, as one would expect, but the G&L is so well balanced you don't notice the weight at all. Couple that with the combination of a Jazz neck with a P body and for me it's well nigh perfect. Finally the G&L USA Jazz pups, although passive, have loads of meat on them and though a 15 inch rig, massive bottom end.

In a nutshell a great bass for gigging or practice and painless Thomann service - ordered Monday, received Thursday- icing on the cake!
