It does not take more!

06.01.2017
I wanted for my new Sennheiser HD 650 the possibility to be able to listen to each of my PCs with the same quality music. In the search for a pure headphone amplifier without additional gimmicks, only limited to a good DA converter and a good amplifier unit, I am at the Fostex HP-A3 landed. Although I was skeptical, whether the pure USB power supply and the automatic driver initialization along with bug-free operation really goes, but it goes and it goes sau well! I do not have much to say about the processing quality. Better is not at the price and still more haptic makes no sense!

Simply plug USB and no more power supply or further cabling - great! Clearly one can optically via Toslink go and USB only as a power supply, but why, if one eh to listen to the PC? Ps it goes with 3m passive USB extension not, but very well over 15m active USB extension of Delock!
To the USB power supply: I know the load condition, in which the power supply of my processor causes maximum ripple of the supply current. This is clearly audible with the onboard sound, but does not beat at all with the Fostex HP-A3! The part remains absolutely unimpressed!

The driver under Windows7 64bit: A driver is automatically installed (without driver CD or Internet), which is preset to 96kHz sampling rate and otherwise nothing else. So if you look at a movie or use simple software, this driver will usually get the Windows internal upsampling. Who uses additional plugins under the Winamp, as for example Asio4all, which should be sampled before eg with HQSoftProc on 96kHz and then the driver directly.

In the variant, which I use, I leave foobar2000 on 96kHz sampling (ultra mode) and then via Wasapi, set to 24bit, directly access the Fostex driver. How to bypass the resampling of Windows.

To the sound: The part sounds like various testimonies it also already said, absolutely neutral. There really is the frequency response with a ruler drawn, as it should be. I can only say resolution; A tiny better than the other two converters I've had so far (EMU 1212m, EMU 1616m). The comparison to the onboard sound solution of the ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 with Realtek ALC1150 and TI NE5532 OPs is impressive and the Extreme 4 is certainly longer than most laptop and other onboard solutions.

To choose the headphones as a game partner of the Fostex HP-A3: There are ghosting opinions in the network, the headphone amplifier would not have enough "power" and then there are the various opinions on high-impedance headphones. Yes, the higher the impedance of the transducer, the lower the output power of an amp. But the efficiency is still crucial!

Fostex provides the power at 32 ohms with 100mW, at 300 ohms with 20mW. This means that it delivers 2.45V at 300 Ohm, which drops to 1.79V up to 32 Ohm. This is the maximum possible level. Higher-impedance headphones (> 300 Ohm) are thus reliably supplied up to 2.45V. On the side of Innerfidelity you can see for a lot of headphones the measurement data as a pdf and there are also 2 values ??from which one can close to the achievable volume a) "Volts RMS required to reach 90dB SPL:" b) "Power Needed For 90dB SPL ". If you ignore the powercompression, you can calculate from the consideration "3db more SPL = doubling the power" to the maximum SPL at ~ 2.45V (U = root (R * P)). If you are a bit rumored, you realize that a Sennheiser HD 650 with about 111db at the Fostex despite 600 Ohm impedance is much louder than a Beyerdynamic DT 880 with 250 Ohm, the 108db probably hardly reach. A Grado SR325e with 32 ohms is however at 1,4V already 120db loud. According to the data sheet, an AKG K712 Pro (~ 70 Ohm) can also be controlled up to approx. 108db SPL

My conclusion: If you are looking for a simple solution to connect your headphones to different PCs without a lot of additional cabling and so that it always sounds the same, should be able to access. Extremely loudspeakers should follow my computing example and see if their performance is enough.

This DAC sounds great and the phones / RCA-out button allows me to switch between my headphones and monitors with the push of a button.
