Squier Bass VI

Peter8591, 29.05.2014
I regularly gig as a string bass, bass guitar and guitar player in a country band and a 50s / 60s rock and roll beat groups and I have loved the Fender twang since my formative years of the 1960s when Jet Harris appeared on the scene with the original Fender version of this guitar. So when Squier introduced it to their range at such an affordable price, temptation got the better of me.
Mine is the sunburst version, which is nicely finished. I suppose the butt jointing of the body slabs is more apparent than I would prefer, but I am not complaining at this price. If this is an issue, I recommend going for and Olympic White or other opaque finish. Sunburst was high on my priorities and I have no regrets.
There are many criticisms of this guitar out there on the internet, but I am inclined towards pragmatism, given the price and an appreciation that some of the issues raised could equally apply to the original Fender models which now command sky high prices.
The main criticism is the finishing of the nut and I agree entirely with this. Bottom E is too close to the edge of the finger board and some reviewers have found that the string slips over the edge of the board. While I appreciate that this could be a problem, I find my soft style of playing allows me to not push the string out of alignment.
The tremolo arm works well. The guitar is stays in tune and it sounds great. Nice block markers and a bound fingerboard add a touch off class to what really is a budget guitar.
There seems to be a propensity for replacing the stock strings with expensive La Bella flat wounds. I did exactly that and, guess what?... changed them straight back again to the round wounds. I play with flat wounds on all my guitars and basses, but this is the one guitar I prefer round wounds on. I think this is to do with my playing style. I play a sort of (bumbling) Chet Atkins style using chords and arpeggios with an underplaying bass riff and the round wounds make the chords sing. The flats make it sound more like a normal bass and too muddy on the chords, but it will never be a Jazz / Precision Bass - it's not meant to be. You will have to live with a high enough action to eliminate fret buzz, so just adjust your playing style to suit. Remember, the originals of these had dampers at the bridge (as did all Fender basses up to the early 60s) so a bit of palm muting helps - as does slab of foam under the strings at the bridge.
This is great for duo work where I can do bass lines behind another guitar player and then fill the sound out with chords as well, when he's soloing. Don't buy this guitar if you are a bass player wanting to play a bit of lead, or if you are a guitar player wanting to dabble with the bass. This is what the guitar magazines will tell you it's for and they are wrong. You need to approach it as an instrument which stands on it's own and explore it's possibilities for your own creative ends. Or.... you could just do some revamps of Besame Mucho, Main Title Theme, Diamonds...

Good quality, good price!

Andrew261, 10.02.2015
Received the guitar in good time, only took 4 days! Well packed and secure. Out of the box, I find that the guitar is very good quality, not what you would expect from a Squier. The finish on the neck and head will stand up to any Fender, the paintwork is flawless and finish is top notch. the pick-ups are responsive and give a good clean sound AND a good grungy sound through the right amp.
That's the good news, there are always a couple of negatives although minor. The bridge is a little awkwardly shaped which causes the G string to rub on it when picked. This will be remedied when the guitar is set up properly but could cause some people problems. The other problem is the loose and creaky tremolo arm with no real locking system that can be very awkward and noisy to use.
Saying that, i would recommend this guitar to anyone who is a bass player who wants to branch out into some fast funky playing.
