My first guitar - I still love her!

DavidB, 16.10.2009
The SG400 was my first guitar, which I had bought as a student. This was the main selling point for the price, which is the first feature I like: the guitar is affordable and also qualitatively good for its price.

A second aspect for me was the look and the playability: The guitar should look rather gloomy and be playable. The guitar looks simple-horny, when I started to talk with guitars, I was pretty fast an SG fan and that has not changed with this guitar, on the contrary! In black she looks gloomy, but not as upside-down as many others "heavy" guitar type of BC. In worn cherry I find them more friendly, but this guitar is always more rock-hard.

Playability: With a guitar in this price class, you can not expect a lot of preparation, that is, I have the footstepped down and the rear of the strings also moved down significantly. Of course, there are also voices that swear by high strings, but I find that at least the front can only be looked at, so that the pressed tone sounds clean.

Sound: There is probably nothing more subjective than describing the sound. It is clear, with a SG we have a less massive body, so it will also affect the sound accordingly. The pickups are, of course, not the very best, here I would recommend an exchange with higher quality. The two humbuckers naturally limit the sound spectrum more than a humbucker and a single coil, but I was and still am satisfied with the sound. The guitar looks good, I like the inlays and it is definitely acceptable processed!

Conclusion: It is definitely a beginner guitar! But if you do not want to start in the 500 EUR + price class as I did at the time, this guitar is very, very well served - assuming he knows what he is getting into: an optical as well as a sound rock tube! When the PUs are replaced, this beauty also has long-term potential. A beauty that will always have a place of honor with me among the better representatives of its kind. Clearly, from me!

Epiphone SG - A beginner instrument

Peet, 08.11.2009
The Epiphone SG-400 was my first guitar. I've been playing them for more than two years now and do not regret the purchase. It is an excellent entry-level instrument and offers a good price / performance ratio.

One could complain about the Epiphone-typical maintenance. When I unpacked the guitar, I first noticed a scratch in the paint. Likewise, the part of the fret is not tidy, so the strings 'snar' when playing. In this respect, you have to be a little lucky when you buy (or you can test the guitar in the shop and take a perfect copy).
The price is, I think, also, that the fingerboard is not made of the best wood and therefore has some irregularities, which however are not further hinder.

The playability corresponds as far as I know of a Gibson SG. The neck is probably more likely to be called thick. However, Shred-Soli a la John Petrucci are also here. It is just pure taste whether one likes the playability of the neck or not. The much-described head load can be easily remedied with a wide leather belt and does not disturb at all. If, however, the guitar is allowed to dangle free-hand on the body, without the neck tending towards the earth, there is a displacement of the belt pin towards the upper horn (as with the ESP LTD Viper).

The sound that this guitar produces is really just a solid one. He is not really outstanding, but not bad either. The guitar has a healthy sustain and gives a powerful, but still biting, sound. In my opinion, the pickups, against many descriptions on the Internet, are not necessarily bad. Although there are models the more nuanced and more dynamic sound, for this price is however completely ok.
