awesome desk looper

MWIVI, 07.10.2017
great instrument for fast creative work! Well implemented simple MIDI protocol with clock out. Sturdy and well built. I did not like the placement of the SD card on the side of the unit but this is really a non-issue.

Superlooper

Christian M. 387, 14.08.2013
The EHX 45000 is currently one of the best looper on the market. The only serious product to compete in the "XL-Looper" is the Boss RC300 Loopstation, which is not necessarily more popular. The following review includes a comparison of the two devices (I have both tested), strengths and weaknesses are each worked out.
The 45000 has 4 mono tracks as well as a stereo track. In practice, there are 2 tracks more than Boss's competing product (3 stereo tracks, but which guitarist needs stereo tracks?) For most applications. The sound quality of both devices is equal and at the highest level. While Boss has a completely unnecessary and qualitatively partial catastrophic effect, the 45000 offers a combined tempo / pitch shift function. For example, in combination with the reverse function, it is possible to create highly interesting and unusual sounds. Also Boss offers tempo and pitch shift, even each as a single function. Unfortunately, the quality of these effects is miserable. Another plus of the 45000: There are separate PAN controls for each of the four mono tracks. For example, if you connect two amps, you can achieve impressive stereo effects live.
Boss has built in a mini-beatbox, while jamming and composing can be inspiring, even if the beats are very stereotypical and are rarely taken into a live performance. EHX offers only the click of a metronome (who can of course connect a drum computer). A further advantage of the 45000: The loop-up / loop-down function allows songs with complex structures similar to the Ableton Live principle to be played back.
In terms of inputs and outputs, the Boss Looper is much better equipped, but the 45000 is adequate for most applications. Instead of an undo / redo function, the EHX-Looper offers "punch-in recording". If this is activated, the material of the selected track is overwritten when recording. Also ok, but Undo / Redo would be more practical. The greatest weakness of the 45000 is in operation. It is particularly important for guitarists, for example, to be able to switch individual tracks on and off without taking their hands off the instrument. This is only possible with Boss. Theoretically, this could be controlled by the 45000 externally via MIDI commands, but I have tried it for 3 days, without success (MIDI commands with Behringer FCB1010 and Ableton Live come, but NEVER do what they should, but always something unpredictable). Also the import of Wav files is me so far despite careful research and nerve-racking experiments failed. This works with the Boss-Looper problem-free.

Conclusion: The EHX-Looper can sometimes leave more (number of tracks, PAN control, combined tempo / pitch shift function without degradation of the sound), sometimes less (no onboard beats, fewer inputs and outputs, the individual tracks Can not be switched on or off by foot switch) than the boss looper. For the DIY enthusiast, EHX is, in my opinion, the better choice. If you would like to have a solid live tool, you probably will be better served with the Boss product (the effect of the effects produced by the tempo / pitch shifting and the PAN controls should not be underestimated). Last but not Least: The 45000 looks sexy! Clearly cooler than the Boss machine ........
