With light and plenty of shade

Jörg S. 699, 16.10.2017
I have the predecessor Denon DN-500AV (unfortunately, in my opinion, deficiencies in the firmware, so I have chosen the successor). Thus, I made the mistake of projecting all known things on the successor Denon DN-700AV. The remote control has been redesigned and the setup menu is no longer the predecessor DN-500AV.

I use the device to listen to music and play movies in surround 5.1 format. The device is really good for that. With good active speakers connected to the pre-amp XLR connectors, I find it enjoyable to enjoy music and movies.

What bothers me a lot, however, are the following things that made me award a 3 on a rating scale of 1-5.

The device is not cheap and comes with a faulty manual of 15 pages per language. The predecessor Denon DN-500AV had a CD with an excellent 138-page manual, which explained everything to me as a layman. The manual for the Denon DN-700AV is underground. On the remote there is a button menu, which does not open the menu. The menu only appears when a TV or PC is connected and the? OSD? on the remote control is pressed. So it is not in the manual. With the DN-500AV you could even show the menu in your own display, which I have not succeeded in the successor so far. Hereby I would like to thank the company Thomann, that she has researched bravely and could answer my questions.

Personally, I am very disappointed with the device in terms of operation. Settings can be made via the current remote control, which were only possible with the DN-500AV via the menu. This has made the menu leaner, which has a positive effect. But in the manual, the individual menu items are not explained. Some are self-explanatory, but not all of them realize what a change in attitude will do. The Denon DN-500AV has been explained in the manual the complete menu, even in pictures.

The Denon DN-500AV could be over? Dimmer? also reduce the lighting of the knobs or turn off. Now only the display is dimmed or switched off. The light of the buttons fades, since the device is directly under the television.

If I play music from a USB stick I can not see the list of titles on the connected TV, which was possible with the predecessor Denon DN-500AV. Now I have to torture myself with the small display. However, the instructions on page 60 state that the music list can be displayed on a connected TV / computer monitor. Is there a trick for it?

The remote control is black and shiny from the surface, so every fingerprint is visible for a long time. In addition, the keys are very bright and also labeled white. Even with glasses, sometimes I need extra light to recognize the button lettering. The predecessor DN-500AV had a matte remote control and the bright buttons were labeled black. Besides, they shone in the dark. I liked it. So I'm wondering who tests the products for usability at Denon.

Nevertheless, I hope now that the device works bravely and gives me many good notes.
I would not buy it again for the price.
