From calculators to keyboards

Chris2807, 03.02.2017
I went from a Roland FA-06 to this..
The main reason for the change concerned the ease of use.. I just couldn't get to grips with the user interface of the Roland. The keys and construction also felt cheap and plasticky. Visibility of the labels on the top casing, next to the knobs and buttons is awful. I found the memorisation of favourites illogical and confusing. Even the sounds had different banks with confusing labelling.. It brought me to the edge of tears on a number of occasions. The sounds were pretty good though, but frustration with the interface caused me to change.
I noticed the Casio PX-560 in a shop one day, and was impressed with the simplicity & quality feel of the keys.. I didn't have time to try it, but decided to find out more, so read the manual & watched some demos on You Tube.
I liked what I saw, and heard, so decided to go for it, and I'm glad I did.
I think that one thing that may put people off, is the name.. Casio.? You can't be serious.! They make cheap
keyboards alongside Bontempi, and calculators don't they..? Well, yes they do, but it seems that they have launched into making some high end keyboard / synth models too.. Don't let the name put you off, there's something cool somewhere, about not using the usual stuff, especially when you hear the sounds it's capable of producing.. And BTW, many Casio calulators from the 1970's are still working perfectly, today.! So that's a good pedigree.!
So, the first thing you'll notice is the Touch Screen.. This is made by Casio themselves, and makes selection & editing very easy. There's a vast array of sounds available, and these can be layered up to a total of 6.
You can access in depth parameters for modification of the basic sounds, memorise them, and the favourites function is very easy to use. The touch screen menu is in colour and very logical, so not too much reference to the manual is needed.
There are 3 assignable control knobs on the top panel, which are useful.
The keys feel beautiful, although they lean more towards a piano feel rather than synth; quite heavy, but with good dynamic sensitivity.
There's a sequencer, and some really nice inbuilt drum sounds & patterns, lots of effects, and plenty of convincing sounds, from concert pianos, through to interesting synth sounds.. I would have liked some mellotron sounds, but you can get close with tweaking..
I bought the bundle from Thomann, including the stand, pedals, and stool, and I'm very pleased with it all, particularly with the ease of use, the solid construction, and the large variety of really good sounds..

A real treat

Michael-the-Keys, 27.06.2016
As an old pianist and keyboardist I needed a slow successor for my Roland RD700GX (SuperNatural piano extension).

The bar was of course high.
As a matter of fact, I took part in a panel discussion on the occasion of the Musikmesse Frankfurt on the well-known manufacturers, including Casio.

Eh? Casio? The playable pocket calculator with the level of the table horn? Until now, the terms for my terms still nix interesting on the legs ... so far!

Well, what am I to say after a first test (still at the show), when I had the part under my fingers: WOW, how cool is that!

Schwups and was subjected to a detailed test:
- clear touch display (operation is partly absolutely self-explanatory)
- a fantastic, weighted 88 keyboard (3 sensors / button)
- Sounds in abundance (the HexLayer sounds are really good!)
- built-in loudspeakers (of course, can be switched off) for playing between without the living room PA
- Weight: 12 Kg (Roland: 32Kg)
- very good value for money
- 2 headphone connectors
- for the teacher-student "I'll show you?" Situation a "duet" modes
- and and and

The thing is stuffed with gimmicks, which only come to the daylight when you look closer and try it out, and there is already the first criticism, because the function or operation of the Midi recorder does not immediately at first glance. (But what should? S, I had-I was not really expecting, but is in it)

Most of the sounds are compelling (especially the wing and e-pianosounds, organ, strings, even solo guitar, but especially the HexLayer), but there are also sounds under the heading "that's even better" and the buttons to the service Of the rhythm controller has probably designed a delicate boy's hand (but quite honestly, I had not expected an accompaniment).
Also, the rhythms do not throw me straight from the stool, but are useful and there is a lot of it ...

For the fact that I was only looking for a really good Digi-Piano, I got not only that, but a whole pack of additional features on top of it, which I strangely do not want to do without now.

All in all: Yes, Casio is actually building a very good digital piano! I do not bother anymore and my Roland is so slow in the corner ...
(And: There is actually no pocket calculator function in the piano ...)
